Job Description

Nurse managers have 24-hour accountability and responsibility for their respective units and serve as the vital link between the administrative strategic plan and the point of care. The nurse manager is responsible for creating safe, healthy environments that supports the work of the health care team and contributes to patient engagement. The role is influential in creating a professional environment and fostering a culture where interdisciplinary team members are able to contribute to optimal patient outcomes and grow professionally.

The Nurse Manager, with a focus on patient safety, is required to function within the parameters of the legal scope of practice and in accordance with the federal, state, and local laws; rules and regulations; and policies, procedures and guidelines of the organization and practice setting. The Nurse Manager functions under his or her own RN license and assumes accountability and responsibility for quality of care provided to patients and their families according to the standards of nursing practice. The Nurse Manager demonstrates responsibility for continued competence in nursing practice, and develops insight through reflection, self-analysis, self-care, and lifelong learning.

SHIFT AND SCHEDULE

Full Time, Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

· Financial Management - Data collection, analysis and interpretation to maintain patient safety and improve unit operations, monitor budget, conduct evaluation of productivity, and ability to forecast future revenue and expenses.

· Human Resources Management and Leadership Skills- maintain staffing needs, apply recruitment techniques, staff selection – interviewing and hiring, performance management, and staff development.

· Performance Improvement - patient and customer engagement, evaluate performance data, respond to outcome measurement findings, patient safety, staff retention, and maintain survey/regulatory readiness.

· Relationship Management and Influencing Behaviors – crucial conversations, promote team dynamics, mentor and coach staff and colleagues, apply communication principles, foster a healthy work environment, and support cultural competency/diversity.

· Foundational Thinking Skills: Apply systems thinking, understand complex adaptive systems definitions and applications.

· Technology: Understand the effect of IT on patient care and delivery systems to reduce workload and support business decisions.

· Strategic Management: Facilitate change, manage projects, effective meeting management and presentation skills, support shared decision making, and foster a culture of ownership and innovation.

· Clinical Practice Knowledge: Maintaining clinical competency for your practice area and staying abreast to current practice standards, challenges, and best practices. It is not an expectation that you reach or maintain clinical mastery of the practice area, as leadership and management is the job role/function.

· Personal and Professional Accountability: Manage through education advancement, continuing education, career planning, involvement in professional organizations, certification and fellowships, and personal/professional reflective practice.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· Current State of Texas License as a Registered Nurse required.

· Bachelor of Science (BSN) Degree in Nursing required.

· If nurse does not have a BSN upon hire, the nurse must be currently enrolled in BSN program with graduation within 12 months of assigned position.

· Certification in nursing leadership required (e.g., CNML, NE-BC, NEA-BC, CENP)

· If nurse does not have certification upon hire, the nurse must obtain leadership certification within 24 months of assigned position.

· Master’s degree (MSN, MBA, MHA) preferred.

· One (1) year of management/leadership experience is preferred.

· Certification in practice area preferred

· Membership in nursing leadership and specialty professional organizations preferred.

· BLS, PALS, NRP basics and chemotherapy certification through APHON are required within 18 months of date of employment.

· Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear. Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. The individual must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over these maximum limits.
