DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Intensive Care unit (ICU) are units within Critical Care Services. The ICU unit will care for patients in need of increased monitoring and treatment who are critically ill or injured or at risk of developing life-threatening organ dysfunction. These patients require monitoring and treatment beyond the capacity of medical/surgical and Step-Down units. Patient care includes but not limited to: Mechanical ventilator support; Vasoactive drug infusions; intracranial injury; trauma; neurologic conditions; septicemia, cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases; Post cardiac procedures, interventions and/or surgeries; post-operative arrhythmia management.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Nurse Manager of the Intensive Care assumes 24-hour responsibility, authority and accountability for patient care activities in ICU. Manages the day-to day delivery of professional nursing services for assigned units. This position is responsible for the overall planning, budgeting, staffing, performance, and operation of the department in conjunction with the director as well as performance and annual review of direct reports. This position directly manages caregivers in the Intensive Care Unit.
Oversee the operations of assigned department to ensure smooth and efficient department operations and that resources are available in the assigned units 24/7. Collaborates with other staff members to facilitate provision of patient care.
Ensures adequate departmental staffing to provide safe patient care through review of appropriate data, development and maintenance of master schedules.
Acts as the department liaison to other hospital departments and outside entities.
Responsible for resource management ensuring appropriate and sufficient equipment and supplies are available.
Manages staffing and scheduling (control of master schedule; ETO & LOA approval; light duty scheduling) - delegates related clerical functions to admin assistant and/or other applicable staff.
Serves as a real-time resource and assists with clinical expertise for staff with problem-solving on patient care, processes, and family issues. Serves as representative for all customers.
Maintains ongoing communication with staff, department leadership, and others to ensure needs are being met for staff and patients. Engages medical staff to obtain input on the operation of the department and key decisions.
Communicates (both written and orally) effectively and maintains professional relationships with caregivers, medical staff, patients, guests and other hospital departments.
Role models two-way communication of the St. Charles Health System mission, vision, values, and strategic plan for the department (staff meetings, rounds, etc.).
Coordinates quality initiatives and process improvements. Aligns and manages to St. Charles Health System metrics and quality initiatives. Oversees trending of quality and financial indicators including LOS with case manager support.
Facilitates department meetings and shared governance/leadership efforts.
Responsible for budget development, regular monitoring, accountability and meeting all operational targets for all areas within span of control. Manages operations within the budget. Provides productivity oversight and review. Works with leadership to achieve productivity standards. Develops and implements annual plan including goals for unit with director and supervisor. Controls and maintains position control including the addition and deletion of positions related to budget and human resource needs.
Hires, directs, coaches and monitors the performance of all direct reports, to develop and maintain a high performance team that meets organizational and department goals. Responsible for performance and annual review of direct reports. Complies with Human Resource processes and controls.
Monitors and ensure all direct reports are current with compliance and safety requirements. Implements and manages all organizational safety directives and goals.
Provides and oversees team’s delivery of customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.
Assists with quality, safety, customer service and regulatory compliance oversight: EMS – Receipt, assignment, tracking and trending, delegation.

Oversees staff documentation for patient care to ensure proficiency in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory agencies.

Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN.
Preferred: Master’s degree in Nursing
Required: Current licensure with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
Ability to travel to business functions/trainings/meetings and all St. Charles Health System worksites.
AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.
Preferred: N/A
Required: 5 years related experience. 1 year nursing leadership experience.
Preferred: Experience in a specialty area of nursing.
Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
