The post holder will work collaboratively with other team members, uphold and live the NMC Nursing Strategy in order to provide safe and outstanding care to their patient, and the patient’s bystanders all the time, every time

• Nurse In Charge will:

• Ensure and oversee the care that is delivered to all patients in the unit is safe, appropriate and effective.

• Determine nursing interventions based on assessment data.

• Prioritizes identified needs.

• Implement nursing actions and evaluates patient outcomes.

• Develops or revises the plan of care

• Deliver identified patient needs.

• Co-ordinate the overall clinical activities of the unit when assigned to the charge nurse role.

• Collaborate with the Nursing Supervisor on staffing for a particular shift.

• Plan, implement and evaluate clinical programs.

• Evaluate the ability of the patient and the patient’s bystanders to understand and participate in decisions about their care.

• Facilitate patient education.

• Maintain accurate and real-time clinical records.

• Perform advanced or specialized nursing skills competently.

• Maintain current knowledge of clinical nursing practice.

• Act as a clinical resource for staff within the department/unit.

• Communicate and consult with other health care disciplines.

• Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope such as but not limited to Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation etc.

• Participate in the development of standards, procedures and protocols.

• Facilitate evidence-based practice.

• Promote change in nursing practice when required.

• Take a proactive role under the guidance of Nursing Management/Nursing Education in training, education and CQI activities of nursing staff.

• Identify opportunities for improvement.

• Perform other professional duties as may be assigned within his/her scope and ability.

• Triages patients of all ages, including Pediatric, adult, and pregnant patients. Collects current symptoms and a detailed medical history to determine the appropriate triage level and ensure timely and accurate care based on the patient's condition

• Assists with emergency procedures such as endotracheal intubation, insertion of central venous and arterial catheters, intercostal drain placement, and intraosseous needle insertion.

• Administers emergency medications and performs Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) interventions, including defibrillation, cardioversion, and medication administration, to stabilize patients with life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias or acute myocardial infarctions.

• Collaborates with emergency physicians, trauma surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement comprehensive care plans, coordinate diagnostic tests and imaging studies, and facilitate timely patient disposition and admission to appropriate hospital units or specialty services.

• Operates and monitors emergency medical equipment to support patient care and ensure accurate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

• Participates in disaster preparedness drills, trauma resuscitations, and Code Blue activations; follows established emergency protocols and procedures; and maintains competency in emergency nursing skills—including trauma assessment, airway management, and haemorrhage control—to optimize patient outcomes in critical situations.

• Do board rounds meeting in the department.

• Monitor and improve departmental KPIs.

• Manage and oversee the daily operations of the emergency department.

• Supervise and support nursing staff, providing guidance and training as needed.

• Handle emergency situations calmly and efficiently.

• Actively participates in rounds in the Emergency Department to ensure that all equipment is properly checked by staff upon their arrival

• Regularly review staff profiles to verify that all team members have completed required emergency-related training, including BLS, ACLS, PALS, and triage courses. Coordinate and schedule additional training as needed

• Manage the shift by allocating staff to each area based on departmental needs, including Resuscitation (RESUS), Observation, Triage, and the Plaster Room.

• Collaborate with the Nurse Manager to address challenges within the department and implement improvements aimed at enhancing patient care and staff satisfaction.

• Be able to make decisions and communicate effectively

• Have an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualifications and experience these mandates.

• Manage their own professional re-licensure.

• Have valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.

• Be willing to work across departments when necessary.

• Be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written)
