Job Description


The Nurse Educator for the Birthing Unit provides strategic, operational support and leadership to nursing practice and education initiatives for the Birthing Unit and across the WHNP program. The Nurse Educator provides both clinical and educational expertise within a client-centered, evidence informed focus, to support and advance nursing excellence and quality of care within and across Obstetrics. The Nurse Educator will develop, implement, coordinate and evaluate education programs that enhance and foster knowledge translation and contribute to high quality patient outcomes within the Birthing Unit at SJHH. The nurse educator will promote continuous learning, professional development, continuous quality improvement and service excellence through role modeling, coaching and mentoring, and effectively engage staff to create and support an interprofessional environment that promotes learning, inquiry, innovation, accountability, collaboration, team building, professionalism and a just culture.

QUALIFICATIONS:
•Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
•Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing required
•Master’s Deegree in nursing or education preferred
•Fetal Health Surveillance Instructor status preferred
•Neonatal Resuscitation Instructor status preferred
•Experience in a clinical teaching role preferred
•Certification in adult learning, and leadership preferred
•Membership with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario preferred
•2 years’ experience within an academic teaching hospital preferred
•Minimum 5 years or more experience in Labour and Delivery including operating room and recovery room preferred
•Demonstrated collaboration and positive working relationships with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, family medicine and midwifery preferred
•Demonstrated ability to facilitate interprofessional simulation-based training in obstetrical emergencies preferred
•Demonstrated knowledge of obstetric best practices as defined by the SOGC and perinatal networks required
•Demonstrated commitment to the organization’s values of Service, Responsible Stewardship, Community responsiveness and Respect
•Demonstrated leadership ability, with expertise in both clinical practice and education
•Demonstrated expertise in quality improvement, project and change management
•Ability to innovate in the delivery of high-quality educational initiatives while using and interpreting quality metrics and effective change management methodologies.
•Plans, designs, implements, coordinates and evaluates organizational-wide practice and education programs.
•Works autonomously within a complex and dynamic environment and effectively manages competing priorities and multiple initiatives.
•Demonstrated scholarly inquiry and effective research skills
•Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and time management skills
•Ability to work effectively autonomously and to develop and sustain collaborative relationships internally and externally with the community and with academic partners
•Ability to use information technology and demonstrate working knowledge and proficiency in appropriate computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Learning Management Systems, Electronic Documentation, Digital Order Sets, all Nursing Related or Clinical Software Applications supported by SJHH”
•Good attendance and work record are essential

RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Provides support and leadership to advance education within nursing practice and education initiatives that will optimize patient outcomes and experiences and improve quality of care.
•Demonstrates advanced knowledge of clinical and education best practices, collaborating and sharing knowledge, skills and experience with Nurse Educators and point-of-care staff.
•Ensures educational activities are congruent with SJHH’s mission, goals, values, priorities, initiatives and resources.
•Ensures educational activities are evidence-informed, client-centred, and reflective of established clinical and education best practices.
•Innovates in the delivery of high-quality educational initiatives while using and interpreting quality metrics and effective change management methodologies.
•Works autonomously within a complex and dynamic environment and effectively manages competing priorities and multiple initiatives.
•Plans, designs, implements, coordinates and evaluates organizational-wide practice and education programs.
•Develops educational initiatives and goals in consultation and collaboration with stakeholders to meet diverse learning needs of target groups.
•Effectively plans, manages, and implements complex change initiatives.
•Acts as formal and informal educational consultant to departments and programs on clinical practice/education issues and their resolution.
•Prioritizes appropriately in consultation with relevant stakeholders within and external to the SJHH organization.
•Collaborates with Clinical Managers, Nurse Educators and point-of-care staff to identify knowledge gaps and support ongoing and just-in-time education for staff within clinical area(s).
•Supports learners and colleagues to identify their own needs as well as the effective learning activities required to meet those needs.
•Advocates for and develops systems to ensure the consistent application of the College of Nurses of Ontario’s Practice Standards and Practice Guidelines as well as standards within applicable nursing specialty (i.e., Provincial Critical Care Standards, Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) Standards, National Emergency Nursing Association (NEMA) Standards, Canadian Standards for Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, etc.)

HOUR OF WORK:
Monday to Friday, days; occasional weekends or off shift hours conditional on operational demands
