Nurse Clinician- Lactation Specialist 50-80% Days-(26003215)

Simply stated, our mission is: Changing Medicine. Changing Lives. ®Our Childrens and Women's Service's Division is hiring for a Nurse Clinician to function as a clinical lactation expert. This position is responsible for providing safe, family-centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyad, as well as for the pumping parent, and is fully collaborative with the patient, patient’s family, significant others, and members of the health care team. This role will have a primary focus caring for lactation needs of NICU and newborn inpatients. Duties & Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Providing lactation assessment, management, education and instruction
  • Performing consultations, rental or sale of lactation equipment and supplies, telephone
    triage, and prenatal education as appropriate
  • Offering post-delivery consultative care to patients: breastfeeding/chest feeding, family
    bonding and planning, etc.
  • Coordination and management of care for patients, including those with complex needs.
  • Communicating effectively with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers, being an
    advocate for the patient at all times
  • Evaluating patient's response to care and initiates independent and/or collaborative.
    changes where appropriate
  • Coordinate and facilitate patient care between multiple disciplines including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community support services.
  • Coordinate patient care to better utilize supportive services through patient visit and possible admission, pre-schedules testing, follows up with test results to both patient and physician, obtains medical history, coordinates follow up visit appointment, provides medication, rehabilitation teaching, etc.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of division/unit quality assessment and improvement programs.
  • Use relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems.

Percent of Time 50% - 80%
Schedule: Day hours with every 7th weekend and 1 holiday
Location: UI Health Care Main Campus
SEIU Pay Grade: 70 - https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/pay-plans/seiu-pay-plan

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 - 3 years of current Lactation consultant, NICU, or OB nursing experience
  • Maintain current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire
  • Demonstrated expertise in specific clinical area of practice
  • Demonstrate excellent patient interaction/communication/education
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Member/involvement in professional organizations
  • Prior experience caring for NICU and newborn inpatients
