The Public Health Nurse (PHN), as an integral member of the Public Health Services team, provides nursing services within the framework of the Population Health Promotion Model and Primary Health Care. The Public Health Nurse translates knowledge from the health and social sciences to support health-enhancing behaviors of individuals, families and population groups through targeted interventions, programs, and advocacy. Inherent in this role are knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to health promotion, prevention, and protection. This employee works relatively independently and is expected to make decisions based on sound assessments in accordance with The Public Health Act, the policies of the Public Health Nursing program, the SRNA Standards of Practice, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, and other relevant legislation. This employee liaises with, and refers to, other health personnel, and other sectors and community groups. The Public Health Nurse works within guidelines established by policy to plan, organize, implement and evaluate nursing programs in an assigned area.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year Public Health Nursing experience is an asset.

  • Knowledge of prevention used in promotion, prevention and protection of health.
  • High level of accuracy in health assessment, nursing diagnosis and treatment.

  • Demonstrates application of the nursing process
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and the community at large.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in media communication and social marketing.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in community development/assessment.
  • Uses independent judgment based on evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to utilize evidence-based practice
  • Demonstrates knowledge of multiple health promotion strategies
  • Willingness to adhere to established Public Health policies and procedures.
  • Applies understanding of child development.
  • High level of accuracy in immunization, and handling specialized equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in educational resource development.
  • Knowledge in negotiation techniques
  • Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment.
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate level of professional conduct and judgement.

Other Education and Training

  • Current CPR Level C
  • Public Health Nursing courses
  • Basic Life Support Level C Certificate (BLS-C)

  • Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)

  • Possession of a personal vehicle suitable for use in the performance of duties
