Job Description

At Mahaska Health the Nuclear Medicine PET/CT Technologist performs a wide variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of radionuclides for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This position is responsible for producing high-quality PET/CT images while ensuring patient safety, comfort, and confidentiality. The technologist works collaboratively with radiologists, cardiologists, oncologists, and other healthcare team members to provide accurate and timely results.
Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to,
  • Prepare, calibrate, and administer radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with safety standards and physician orders.
  • Perform PET/CT imaging procedures following department protocols and industry best practices.
  • Operate PET/CT scanners and related equipment to obtain diagnostic-quality images.
  • Verify patient identification, review medical history, and explain procedures to patients and families to ensure comfort and understanding.
  • Monitor patients during imaging for safety and comfort, responding promptly to patient needs.
  • Adhere to radiation safety principles and maintain compliance with regulatory standards (NRC, state, and institutional).
  • Process, analyze, and transfer imaging data to PACS and other reporting systems.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of administered doses, patient information, and imaging records.
  • Assist with scheduling, patient preparation instructions, and quality assurance/quality control procedures.
  • Participate in continuing education, staff training, and departmental quality improvement initiatives.

  • Conduct self in accordance with Mahaska Health’s confidentiality policy; ensuring to follow all MHP training guidelines in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with employees, visitors, medical staff, and patients, keeping in mind the person’s unique needs within their age category (refer to Mahaska Health’s Age Specific Standards of Care Policy).
  • Ability to deal with confidential information.

  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Attend meetings, as requested.

Job Requirements include but are not limited to,
  • Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program.
  • Current ARRT (N) and/or NMTCB certification required; ARRT (CT) preferred.
  • Minimum of one year clinical experience in Nuclear Medicine or PET/CT preferred (new graduates considered).
  • Prior experience with PET/CT technology, oncology imaging, or cardiac imaging is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of nuclear medicine, radiopharmaceutical handling, and cross-sectional anatomy.
  • Ability to operate PET/CT scanners and related imaging equipment.
  • Excellent patient care, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
  • Will be required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.
  • Consistently support the Compliance Program through personal example; the provision of day-to-day instruction and correction to employees regarding compliance-related issues; application of appropriate discipline as required for compliance violations; and ongoing monitoring of activities and work product in areas of responsibility with respect to compliance-related issues.
