As Electric Boat continues to support construction of the VIRGINIA Class and COLUMBIA submarine programs, our Quality Organization plays a critical role in ensuring every component meets the highest standards of safety, performance, and reliability.

Nuclear Inspectors verify that the structures, systems, and components supporting submarine nuclear reactors meet the rigorous requirements and standards necessary to ensure the safe operation of our Navy's nuclear fleet.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform non-destructive testing (NDT), including magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), and other inspection methods on welds and materials used in nuclear submarine construction and maintenance.
  • Conduct fabrication and installation verification inspections.
  • Apply approved NDT techniques and evaluate the physical condition of systems (piping, structural, electrical, etc.) to verify material is built according to plan and standards.
  • Review and interpret drawings, technical specifications, and procedural requirements related to nuclear systems.

This position is located at the Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, RI.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED OR 2 plus years of related technical experience.
  • 1+ years of experience including, but not limited to construction, manufacturing, quality assurance, or repair work.
  • Must be able to attain a key department qualification/certification within the first 3 months after starting as a Nuclear Inspector.
  • Ability to grind joints and clear indications as needed throughout inspection process.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, shipyard procedures, test documents, blueprints, diagrams, and understand basic layout functions.
  • Strong PC skills to include proficiency with MS Word and MS Excel.
  • Personal integrity and a commitment to uphold the high standards of nuclear work.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperature conditions as required.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a Jaeger color vision eye examination.
  • Must be able to obtain a non-destructive test (NDT) inspection certification decided by department need.
  • Willingness to learn unfamiliar skills (I.E. pipe, mechanical, electrical, shielding) based on departmental needs.
  • Must be able to maintain certifications through periodic audits and testing.
  • Must be available to work all shifts, weekends and extended hours as business needs dictate.
  • May be required to possess their own basic hand tools.
  • May be required obtain and maintain a security clearance through the Department of War.

Preferred:

  • Inspection/quality assurance experience.
  • Previous NDT experience is desired.
  • Experience with EB certification and training electronic programs (Mainframe, Electronic Desktop, Cornerstone, etc.).
  • Previous experience as a tradesperson or inspector in the piping, mechanical, or structural fields.
  • Completion of Vocational, Technical, Community College or Apprentice programs.
  • Related military/Navy experience.

General Dynamics Electric Boat is a business unit of General Dynamics with headquarters in Groton, CT. The world’s first and finest submarine builder, Electric Boat was established in 1899 to complete the U.S. Navy’s first modern commissioned submarine, USS Holland. Designed and built by Electric Boat, USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, was launched in 1954. Electric Boat has designed and delivered 17 of the U.S. Navy’s 20 classes of nuclear submarines.
