Job Description

The Nuclear and Chemical Processing Division at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is seeking talented scientists and engineers to support research, technology development, and mission execution in nuclear materials processing, chemical separations, waste treatment, and environmental remediation. As the U.S. Department of Energy’s Environmental Management Laboratory, SRNL advances technologies that enhance national security, enable clean energy, and address complex legacy challenges across the DOE complex.

Why Join SRNL and the Nuclear and Chemical Processing Division
SRNL offers the opportunity to contribute to nationally critical missions while advancing technologies that protect the environment, strengthen national security, and enable sustainable energy solutions. In the Nuclear and Chemical Processing Division, team members engage in impactful, collaborative work that shapes the future of nuclear materials management and chemical processing for the DOE complex and beyond.

  • Conduct research, engineering analysis, experimentation, or system design in support of nuclear and chemical processing initiatives central to SRNL’s mission.
  • Develop, evaluate, and demonstrate technologies related to nuclear materials processing, actinide separations, waste treatment, feed preparation, and advanced chemical processes.
  • Perform laboratory-scale experiments, modeling and simulation, material characterization, or process system evaluations.
  • Interpret and document research results through technical reports, publications, presentations, and sponsor communications.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—including chemical, nuclear, mechanical, and materials experts—to deliver solutions that meet DOE mission needs.
  • Support development, scale-up, and deployment of new technologies in radiological, chemical, or high-hazard operational environments.
  • Ensure all work is conducted safely and in accordance with SRNL, DOE, and regulatory quality and safety requirements.
  • Participate in proposal development, program planning, and engagement with DOE, NNSA, and other federal sponsors.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and best practices in nuclear science, chemical processing, and environmental management.

Work Environment

Work may occur in laboratories, radiological or chemical processing facilities, gloveboxes, shielded cells, or office settings, depending on the assignment. SRNL provides comprehensive training, strong safety programs, and opportunities for continuous learning and advancement. Select analytical or modeling-oriented positions may support hybrid work arrangements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics).
  • Demonstrated ability to perform scientific research, engineering analysis, or experimental design.
Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to technical detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate within diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to SRNL’s safety culture and rigorous operational standards.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance for which US citizenship is legally required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in nuclear materials processing, radiochemical separations, waste treatment technologies, or radiological operations.
  • Familiarity with process modeling tools, data analytics, computational chemistry, or simulation software.
  • Experience in DOE laboratory environments, nuclear facilities, or regulated high-hazard operations.
  • Track record of technical publications, patents, or project achievements.
  • Experience in project planning, technical integration, or customer/sponsor interface.
