Are you passionate about finding solutions for the waste management of spent fuel and radioactive waste for Small Modular Reactors (SMR)? You will work with a team of talented and driven engineers in the search for disposal routes and treatment methods that are technically, regulatory and economically feasible. Join Blykalla, Sweden’s leader in SMRs, as a Nuclear Back-End Management Engineer, and contribute to shaping the future of sustainable energy.
Blykalla is developing the next generation of nuclear technology with our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) based on innovative fuel, materials, and reactor designs. As Sweden’s only SMR developer, we are on a mission to decarbonize industries and enable safe, scalable, and sustainable energy solutions. Our technology uses uranium nitride fuel and lead coolant, creating novel challenges and opportunities for the fuel cycle and supporting systems.
As a Nuclear Back-End Management Engineer, you will play a vital role to find feasible treatment methods and waste and disposal routes for spent nuclear fuel and waste from Blykalla’s SEALER reactors. Waste management is covered by extensive frameworks and demonstrating compliances is a cornerstone of nuclear licensing.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about finding sustainable and economical ways to manage spent nuclear fuel and waste and wants to make a difference in an innovative environment. You will work closely with more experienced nuclear Back-End engineers and support our design team and nuclear safety team.
You will play a vital role in defining and delivering Blykallas approach to spent fuel and radio active waste management - spanning technical feasibility, regulatory engagement.
Define and evaluate treatment, classification and disposal solutions for low, intermediate- and high-level waste.
Identify opportunities and methods to minimize volumes and complexity of the waste through design and material solutions, process optimization and reprocessing and reuse of materials.
Contribute to the broader deployment of strategy for Blykallas SMRs ensuring Back-End readiness aligns with reactor timelines.
Contribute to writing technical reports and feasibility studies for licensing, design decisions, and strategic planning.
Support and produce waste management documentation for our SEALER reactors and licensing processes.
Review waste related documentation and other related documentation.
Stay updated on development in waste management and integrate them were appropriate.
Stay updated on regulatory changes in Back-End and integrate them into Blykalla documentation.
You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We value Team chemistry and strive to create a workplace that you enjoy coming to. You understand that nuclear waste is not just a technical challenge but also a matter of public trust and long-term accountability. You have strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing. You are detail-oriented, organized, and eager to learn.
We believe you have:
Experience from nuclear engineering, nuclear chemistry, waste management or related technical field.
Experience writing or contributing to detailed technical documents such as research papers, design reports, or engineering summaries.
Familiarity with regulatory or standards-based documentation (SAR), even if indirectly (e.g., coursework requiring structured report writing).
Basic understanding of nuclear safety principles, reactor operations, or licensing processes is a plus.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in nuclear engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related field.
Fluent in the English language, both in speech and writing
Fluency in the Swedish language, both in speech and writing
This position is for our office in Stockholm.
So, what do you think?
Become part of a team that’s transforming nuclear energy and building a sustainable future. Together, we’ll deliver safe, clean, and reliable power to the world.

We strongly believe that diversity of experience, perspectives, and background will lead to a better environment for our employees and a better product. This is something we value deeply and we encourage everyone to be a part of changing the way the world thinks about power supply!
Note: We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and are an equal-opportunity employer.

Blykalla is on a mission to change the energy future of the world, by providing green, safe, baseload energy through next generation small modular lead-cooled reactors.
Blykalla is a Swedish deep-tech company founded in 2013 by Janne Wallenius, Peter Szakalos and Jesper Ejenstam as a spin-off from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where Janne Wallenius carried out research on design and safety analysis on lead-cooled reactor systems since 1996.
We develop and build lead-cooled small modular reactors (SMRs) to deliver safe, scalable and carbon-free baseload power supply. Thanks to lead-cooling, we achieve high safety in a very compact format, allowing for a simple and cost effective design that can be mass produced. Our unique reactor design will provide safe and green baseload energy that is a perfect complement to solar and wind power.
