Electroencephalogram (EEG) Technicians use specialized equipment and processes tomonitora patient’s nervous system activity. They set up, perform, andmonitorEEG tests which record the electrical activity of a patient’s brain over time. EEG Technicians work under the supervision of epileptologists, neurologists, or other doctors.As a Non-registered EEG Technician at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, you will be provided withample opportunitiesto grow & expand your career. Within this position, you will receive training and instruction in performing electroencephalographic examinations and/or epilepsy monitoring. Non-registered technicians should expect to be in this role for one year with the expectation that they will become fully registered as an EEG Technologist.

You will be able to move intodifferent roleswithin the department, including Registered EEG Tech Readers and IOM (Intraoperative Monitoring) Technicians

A caregiver in this position works Monday-Friday from 8:00AM – 4:30PM, with on-call requirements.

Martin North will be the primary work location, but floating to Martin South and Tradition Hospitals will berequired, as needed.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform electroencephalographic examinations.

  • Select predetermined electrode combinations (montages) to obtain recordings, recognizeartifactsand takeappropriate stepstoeliminatethem.

  • Monitor onthe same apparatus, other variables such as electromyograms, electrocardiograms, electro-oculograms, respiration, etc.

  • Observepatientwith video recording equipment, ensure EEG and tape are lined up exactly and check focus,lightingand microphone.

  • Set-up patient for continuous monitoring at the bedside with video, ifindicated

  • Instruct nursing caregivers on pushing eventbuttonand care of videos.

  • Abstract relevant information from the patients' clinicalrecordand obtainadditionalinformation.

  • Successfully obtain the American Board of Registration for Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) credentialing for a Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.) within two years of hire.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Associate’s DegreeinElectroneurodiagnosticsor a related patient care field OR two years of direct patient care experience

  • One year of experience as a non-registered EEG Technician

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity in order to place electrodes precisely and to operate recording equipment.
  • Ability to push and maneuver EEG machine weighing 320 pounds and Evoked Potential machine weighing 420 pounds.
  • Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
