Job Description

Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) – Contracted Technical Assessor

Location: Remote (UK‑based) with UK and potential international travel
Contract Type: Contractor / Independent

About the role

UKAS is the national accreditation body for the United Kingdom, responsible for evaluating and accrediting organisations that provide conformity assessment services, including certification, testing, inspection, and calibration.

We are expanding our network of independent Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) Technical Assessors to support accreditation and surveillance activity across NDT inspection, testing and personal certification scopes

As a contracted Technical Assessor, you will evaluate conformity assessment bodies to ensure NDT inspection, testing, and certification activities are conducted competently, consistently, and in accordance with scheme requirements. Assessments may include desk reviews, on-site inspections, witnessed assessments, and post-audit reviews.

This is a flexible, remote role with some travel required. The role may be undertaken alongside existing employment, subject to employer approval and conflict-of-interest considerations.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking technically credible NDT professionals with extensive hands-on experience who can confidently evaluate how organisations implement NDT methods, procedures, and competence requirements in practice.

You will assess conformity assessment bodies conducting ISO/IEC 17020 inspection activities, ISO/IEC 17025 testing activities, and ISO/IEC 17024 personal certification activities related to non‑destructive testing (NDT).

You will be expected to demonstrate strong practical expertise, typically supported by PCN Level 3 certification (past, present, or working towards), or certification to a similar Personal certification scheme, and the ability to question, challenge, and evaluate technical decisions during assessment.

Relevant NDT methods may include one or more of the following:

  • Magnetic Particle Testing
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing
  • Ultrasonic Testing (including TOFD and advanced techniques)
  • Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing
  • Radiography (Gamma, X‑ray, digital and real‑time methods)
  • Eddy Current Testing
  • Visual Testing
  • Experience of inspection related to composite construction

You will be able to evidence:

  • Extensive experience working in NDT inspection, testing or technical oversight roles
  • Strong understanding of NDT methods, limitations and appropriate application
  • Experience overseeing procedures, techniques, equipment and personnel competence
  • The ability to review technical documentation, records and evidence critically
  • Clear, concise reporting and sound technical judgement

Having a formal qualification, such as an HNC or equivalent, in an engineering discipline is preferred, but extensive relevant experience is considered more significant.

Typical Backgrounds

This role is suited to experienced NDT professionals who have operated at a senior technical or oversight level. Typical backgrounds may include:

  • NDT Procedure Authorizer or Responsible Level 3
  • NDT Technical Manager
  • Quality or Inspection Manager within an NDT facility
  • Technical Specialist or Consultant supporting NDT certification activity
  • Technical staff within certification bodies or assessment centres

Experience may have been gained within manufacturing, engineering, inspection bodies, testing organisations or certification environments, provided it demonstrates strong technical depth and independent technical judgement.

Conflict of Interest

All applicants are required to submit a conflict-of-interest declaration during the selection and onboarding process. This ensures the impartiality, independence, and integrity of UKAS accreditation activities. Any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts will be evaluated and managed in accordance with UKAS guidelines prior to scheduling assessment activities.
