What You’ll Do

As the Assistant Site & Health Director – NJ, you’ll play a key role in ensuring smooth operations, camper well-being, and excellent communication at our smaller, tight-knit New Jersey site. The Assistant Site Director in New Jersey will serve as the designated Health Director for your site in alignment with New Jersey youth camp licensing requirements.

You’ll oversee daily logistics, support staff and campers, and serve as the primary point of contact for camper health, parent communication, and site organization. You’ll play a critical part in ensuring a safe, responsive, and supportive environment for campers and team members throughout the season. Responsibilities in accordance to New Jersey Youth Camp Safety Standards and DEAN protocols include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the Site Director to ensure camp operations run safely, smoothly, and on schedule each day; take ownership of establishing procedures and readiness standards that support an efficient and compliant Health Center.
  • Coordinating camper health needs by organizing health forms, administering medications in accordance with camper health plans, documenting medication logs in compliance with HIPAA guidelines and confidentiality, and providing first aid and emergency care for injuries or illnesses.
  • Review Camper and Staff Health histories prior to and during camp operations to ensure documentation is acceptable and identify allergies, medical conditions, and other concerns requiring accommodation.
  • Communicating with parents regarding camper health updates, incidents, or general inquiries in a clear, timely, and supportive manner.
  • Greeting families at check-in/check-out with professionalism and warmth; answering parent phone calls, documenting conversations in writing, and sending clear, professional follow-up emails.
  • Managing supplies and ensuring all program, safety, and first aid materials are stocked and ready for daily use.
  • Supporting the team with logistics, camper transitions, sun safety, emergency procedures, and proactive behavior management strategies.
  • Provide, oversee, and respond with first aid for campers + team members.
  • Maintaining and distributing accurate rosters, daily reports, and printables from CampBrain and the portal to support planning, compliance, and visibility.
  • Record Keeping and Documentation
    • Maintain a bound medical log at the health center, as required. Log must document every health center visit with the date, name of camper/counselor, ailment, treatment provided, and name of who administered treatment.
    • Store and handle the log in compliance with HIPAA privacy standards, ensuring access is limited to those with a legitimate need to know.
  • Modelingcalm, professional leadership and fostering DEAN’s culture of kindness, inclusion, and accountability among both staff and campers.
  • Serveas a point of contact for health-related communication with team members and, when appropriate, families.
  • Conductdaily health surveillances by monitoring camper and team member wellness, identifying concerns early, and escalating when needed
  • Supportoverall camp safety practices, including collaboration with team members overseeing high-risk activities (e.g., waterfront, athletics)
  • Medication Administration where necessary, utilizing the advisement of the RNs in the DEAN Adventure Camps’ PA location
  • Maintainrequired first aid supplies by conducting regular checks and request restocking as needed
  • Immediately report suspected communicable disease cases or outbreaks to the Site Director and DEAN Adventure Camps administration so the local health department can be notified per state requirements

Schedule and Requirements

  • This is a full-time, on-site seasonal role from July 6th – August 14th
  • Camp operates 7am–6pm
  • Ability to commute to: 2500 Main St, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must be up to date on all immunizations and willing to provide emergency health information upon hire.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, respond quickly to emergencies, and work in an active, outdoor environment.
  • Per N.J.A.C. 8:25-5.2, the Health Director at a New Jersey day camp hold a current qualifying credential from a Recognized Certification Agency (N.J.A.C. 8:25 Appendix D) For DEAN Adventure Camp’s Lawrenceville site, the required credential is
    • Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (professional level) from an approved certification agency: American Red Cross or approved equivalent
    • Your seasonal placement in this role is contingent on holding a current, valid certification at the start of camp and throughout the season
      • Other qualifying credentials accepted under N.J.A.C. 8:25-5.2 include: licensed NJ physician, NJ-licensed Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, certification in Advanced First Aid, paramedic, EMT, First Responder CIM, or BOC-certified athletic trainer

Role Boundaries

  • In accordance with NJ regulations, the Health Director may not be assigned to ongoing high-risk activities (including lifeguarding or activity leading) at the same time as Health Director responsibilities, nor counted in staff-to-camper ratios
  • The Health Director is not authorized to administer medications outside of what is documented in DEAN Adventure Camps’ written medical policies and the written authorizations on file for each camper, nor are they authorized to make medical diagnoses; their role is to provide first aid, monitor wellness, document observations, escalate appropriately, and coordinate with parents and EMS
