An RN Surgery Nightingale is a recently retired Surgery RN who uses their experience and passion for mentoring to transfer knowledge and clinical expertise to newer nurses across the organization. In this role, you will deliver professional nursing care in the operative setting to patients undergoing surgical and other invasive procedures while providing hands-on guidance, support and mentorship to help develop the next generation of perioperative nurses.

A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) between 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., with weekend and holiday requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform circulating functions including monitoring, recording and communicating patient condition and managing overall nursing care of patient before, during and after procedure.

  • Prepare operating rooms and surgical instruments and equipment for use.

  • May perform scrub functions including the selection and handling of instruments and supplies used during procedure.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

  • Current state licensure as Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Three years of experience in an RN Hospital position at the Cleveland Clinic immediately prior to retirement

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or ALS through American Red Cross

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelors of science in nursing (BSN)

  • Perioperative experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing and walking for periods of time.

  • May require full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.

  • Medium Work – May include exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
