Why this role?

If you enjoy autonomy, true emergency exposure and being part of a structured, professional night service, this is a role where you can genuinely develop your confidence in out-of-hours and critical care nursing.

Village Vet St Albans is a well-established small animal hospital and a 24-hour emergency clinic supporting multiple practices across Hertfordshire. You will see a varied and stimulating caseload, not just routine overnight monitoring.

The hospital is fully equipped with:

  • 24-hour inpatient care providing continuity of treatment

For those working nights, shared accommodation is available during your working block, offering practical support and added convenience.

The rota

4 nights on, 8 nights off on a rolling rota.

This structure provides extended time off between blocks while maintaining exposure to emergency and urgent care cases.

Annualised hours: 33.9 hours per week equivalent.

Your role

This is a hands-on Night RVN position within the Vet-24 night team.

You will:

  • Allocate and manage cases with a proactive, holistic approach to inpatient care under the guidance of the Veterinary Surgeon
  • Triage out-of-hours calls and support emergency admissions
  • Assist with appointments, treatments and procedures
  • Lead detailed nurse-to-nurse patient handovers to the day team
  • Participate in the cleaning and maintenance of hospital areas
  • Actively engage in CPD and further study relevant to emergency and critical care

You will work as a Tier 2/3 RVN alongside the Veterinary Surgeon to support effective management of overnight and urgent care patients.

This is an active clinical role where you will be fully involved in patient care throughout your shift.

Development and career progression

As part of Linnaeus, you will have access to the Nursing Career Framework, which includes:

  • An industry-leading banded pay structure aligned to skill level
  • Defined progression pathways
  • Clinically focused development routes
  • People leadership pathway options

CPD, including advanced qualifications, is actively encouraged, particularly for those interested in emergency and critical care nursing.

Benefits

  • RCVS and VDS fees paid
  • External CPD allowance
  • Extensive free Linnaeus CPD programme
  • Career progression opportunities
  • Staff discount schemes including gym membership
  • Life Assurance
  • Enhanced sickness pay
  • Enhanced equal family leave
  • E-car salary sacrifice scheme
  • Employer contribution pension scheme
  • Wellness programme including:
    • Employee Assistance Programme
    • Eyecare voucher scheme
    • Free annual flu jab
    • Cycle to work scheme
  • Recruitment referral reward scheme

Linnaeus is committed to supporting the physical and mental health of all associates, with Mental Health First Aiders across practices and access to a confidential Employee Assistance Programme.

If you want nights that build your clinical confidence, give you meaningful time off, and offer practical support like accommodation during your working block, this is a well-structured opportunity.
