Job Description

ABcom, a prominent provider of design and build services for business-critical network infrastructures for data centers and organizations of all types, is adding an experienced NICET Fire Alarm Technician to its growing team.

The Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for the installation, programming, testing, inspection, service, and troubleshooting of commercial fire alarm and life-safety systems. This position works under the direction of project managers, department supervisors, foremen, and/or site leads to deliver projects safely, accurately, on schedule, and in compliance with applicable codes, project documents, and manufacturer requirements.

This position reports to the Superintendent or Vice President of Operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, program, test, inspect, service, and troubleshoot commercial fire alarm and life-safety systems.
  • Install and terminate fire alarm control panels, notification appliances, initiating devices, modules, power supplies, and associated low-voltage cabling.
  • Read and correctly interpret plans, specifications, riser diagrams, point lists, sequence-of-operations documents, and shop drawings.
  • Perform system testing and support acceptance inspections with customers, general contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Diagnose system, circuit, device, and programming issues and complete repairs or modifications as required.
  • Complete system upgrades, additions, and tenant improvements while minimizing disruption to customer operations.
  • Prepare accurate daily reports, inspection records, test documentation, redlines, as-builts, and other required project paperwork.
  • Coordinate work with project managers, supervisors, foremen, other trades, and customers; promptly communicate technical or scheduling concerns.
  • Maintain required certifications and stay current with applicable codes, standards, manufacturer requirements, and industry practices.
  • Adhere to and help enforce all company safety policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and company insurability.
  • Travel locally and occasionally out of state, including possible overnight travel, as project needs require.
  • Participate in scheduled on-call or after-hours service coverage when required.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent, Project Manager, or Vice President of Operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level II certification required; Level III is highly preferred.
  • At least 4 years of recent commercial fire alarm installation, service, programming, testing, and troubleshooting experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA 72, applicable electrical and building codes, and fire alarm installation and testing practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings, fire alarm plans, riser diagrams, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Experience programming and servicing fire alarm systems from one or more major manufacturers; experience across multiple platforms is highly valued.
  • Ability to use meters, test equipment, laptops, programming tools, hand tools, and power tools safely and correctly.
  • Ability to complete accurate electronic and written documentation, including inspection reports, test results, daily logs, and as-built markups.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with project teams, customers, inspectors, and other trades.
  • Ability to work on ladders, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and perform the physical duties required on active construction and service sites.
  • Ability to work overtime, nights, or weekends when project or service needs require.
  • Must own and maintain the company-required technician hand tools in good operating condition.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level III certification.
  • Manufacturer training or certifications for commonly installed commercial fire alarm platforms.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification and other relevant safety training.
  • Experience with voice evacuation, mass notification, smoke control interfaces, sprinkler monitoring, elevator recall, and related life-safety integrations.
  • Experience leading small crews or serving as the technical lead on fire alarm projects.
