Job Description

License and Certification Qualifications:

  • Valid Georgia driver's license Required

Education Qualifications:

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree or equivalent Required
  • College training and/or academic preparation through non-English language Preferred

Experience Qualifications:

  • 1 year Experience in human services field, preferably with students and in a multilingual environment Required
  • 1 year Professional-level experience in another language or in a multilingual environment, work experience dealing with the public in a non-English language, work requiring the use of multilingual abilities, and work experiences with families and children Preferred

Skills Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English and the predominant minority language
  • Word processing skills in English and at least one other language
  • High level of ability in English and predominant minority language
  • Ability to represent Gwinnett County Public Schools in a positive and professional manner

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide family outreach and training activities to the parents of Multilingual Learner and newcomer students to assist them in helping their children improve their academic achievement and in becoming active participants in the education of their children.

  • Engage newcomer students and families in activities that provide enhanced instructional opportunities for immigrant children and youth.
    • Provide mentoring or academic or career counseling for immigrant children and youth;
    • Raise awareness of access to supplemental resources such as additional classroom supplies, support for transportation, and other costs that are directly attributable to basic instructional needs;
    • Invite newcomer students and families to participate in programs such as introduction to the educational system and civics education to achieve elementary and secondary schools;
    • Coordinate with community-based organizations, institutions of higher education, private sector entities, or other entities with expertise in working with newcomer students and families by offering comprehensive community services.
  • Support in the engagement of parents of newcomer students and multilingual learners in family literacy, parent and family outreach, and training activities designed to assist parents and families to become active participants in the education of their children.
    • Assist with professional learning options for schools implementing family literacy classes;
    • Support INC and school-based family literacy classes;
    • Present Newcomer Academy classes for newcomer families
    • Use resources for newcomers and refugees developed by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Engage families of Multilingual Learner students in supplemental Language Instruction Educational Programs (LIEPs).
    • Provide information to families on the purpose and organization of supplemental LIEPs;
    • Collaborate with school leaders and other school staff to inform families about supplemental LIEPs;
    • Assist families with overcoming barriers to participation in supplemental LIEPs
    • Build the capacity of families in understanding and engaging their children in the supplemental LIEPs outside of the regular school day whenever possible.
    • Follow up with parents of Multilingual Learners to help them build on the experiences their children have through supplemental LIEPs to prepare for success in the next school year or semester.
  • Provide support and information to newly arrived parents/guardians of multilingual learners.
    • Greet and assist the parents/guardians inquiring about the International Newcomer Center (INC) or Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS)
    • Assist INC newcomer families with online registration
  • Perform other Title III duties as assigned.



Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, negotiate stairs, climb ladders, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear, manipulate tools and small items with hands, and lift and transport up to 50 pounds over short distances. The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle in performance of duties. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision. The employee may be subjected to a wide range of ambient temperature and humidity conditions while working on equipment under varying conditions including overhead work and work in confined spaces. Potential hazards of this position include working with electricity, working with heat and noise producing machinery and equipment, working on elevated equipment using ladders or other lifting devices, and use of chemicals and solvents.
