Job Description

The School of International Service (SIS) at American University (AU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-line position in New Technology and Security at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2019.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. or the highest equivalent degree by August 2019. We seek scholar-teachers whose research focuses on new technologies and emerging security threats, especially the strategic, ethical, legal, and governance concerns related to their past and future evolution. These include (but are not limited to) artificial intelligence, autonomy, social media, cyber security, robotics, additive manufacturing (or “3-D printing”), unmanned aerial vehicles (“drones”), gene alteration, human enhancement, and other technologies or initiatives associated with what’s known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The focus of his or her research will be on the advantages and disadvantages of new technological innovations as they relate to the past, present and future security of human beings. Scholars who come from a wide range of disciplines are especially welcome to apply.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about working in a multidisciplinary environment that includes social scientists and natural scientists, as well as experts in the humanities. Being knowledgeable about both the technical aspects of these technologies and the human context in which they are used is highly desirable. The University has faculty who address a wide array of security policy, strategic studies, information security, and national defense issues; but we have particular strengths in the areas of cyber security, risk assessment, asymmetrical conflict, non-traditional security threats, conflict analysis, data analytics, and technological innovation.

As a school that includes a variety of scholarly disciplines and approaches, we seek the best candidates without respect to a particular discipline. We seek scholar-teachers whose work is theoretically grounded, empirically tested, and policy relevant. Candidates may hold terminal degrees in physics, computer science, biotechnology, mathematics, political science, history, international relations, anthropology, economics, or a range of other fields. Candidates should demonstrate excellence in research and teaching and a commitment to school and university service. Candidates should also share the School’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. A desire to mentor PhD candidates in our vibrant PhD program is also desirable.

Application Instructions

Salary and benefits are competitive. Review of applications will begin late August and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit applications via Interfolio. Include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, recent teaching evaluations, and recent published papers as well as a statement of past and/or future contributions to diversity and inclusion through teaching, research, and/or service.

You also need to submit via Interfolio the names and email addresses of three references and request that Interfolio contact them for a confidential letter of recommendation.
