Job Description

A rare opportunity is available for a Neurosurgeon to join a major hospital in Northern Australia, working within a high-acuity surgical and critical care environment that offers genuine clinical variety, strong multidisciplinary collaboration, and the chance to make a meaningful impact across a vast geographic catchment.

This is an excellent role for a specialist who is looking for more than just a standard metro consultant post. You will step into a service that supports patients across the Top End, with referrals extending across the Northern Territory and into northern Western Australia. The hospital is a major teaching institution and a key referral centre for complex pathology, trauma and urgent surgical presentations that are not commonly seen elsewhere in Australia.

In this position, you will provide high-quality neurosurgical care across inpatient, outpatient, emergency and on-call settings, while also contributing to service development, education, mentoring and clinical leadership. The successful doctor will work closely with colleagues across surgery, ICU, emergency, anaesthesia and perioperative services in a busy and highly collaborative tertiary setting. The broader surgical division is known for its high emergency load, broad case mix, significant Indigenous health exposure, and strong teaching culture, with regular grand rounds, radiology meetings, audits, pathology sessions and research opportunities.

Why this role stands out

  • Senior specialist salary package up to $349,187
  • Major tertiary referral environment with broad operative and acute exposure
  • Opportunity to help shape and strengthen a growing neurosurgical service
  • Strong academic and teaching links, including medical student and postgraduate training
  • Meaningful cross-specialty work with surgery, ICU, ED and critical care teams
  • Exposure to complex pathology and culturally diverse patient populations
  • Supportive senior medical environment with real scope for influence and leadership

About the service
You will be joining a hospital network that serves as the principal specialist referral centre for the region, with a catchment of more than 300,000 people. The broader surgery division spans a wide range of specialties and subspecialties, with outreach connections to other hospitals and smaller communities across the Top End. Public material also shows the service has an established teaching structure and that specialist neurosurgical services were formally commenced there in 2016–17, making this a particularly appealing opportunity for a neurosurgeon who wants to contribute both clinically and strategically.

The role
As part of the neurosurgery team, you will:

  • Provide specialist neurosurgical assessment, treatment and perioperative care
  • Manage inpatient flow, ward rounds and outpatient clinics
  • Participate in emergency and after-hours neurosurgical care on a rostered basis
  • Provide expert advice to colleagues and referring clinicians
  • Contribute to education, peer review, mentoring and departmental development
  • Support a high-performing, culturally safe and collaborative team environment

What you will need

  • Current or Eligibility for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Contemporary specialist experience in Neurosurgery
  • Commitment to high-quality patient care, education and team-based practice
  • A genuine interest in improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • For appointment at senior level, at least 6 years of service in medical practice as a Specialist Medical Officer

Why Northern Territory?
Darwin offers a lifestyle that is very hard to match in the larger capital cities. It is known for its warm climate year-round, relaxed pace of life and short commute times, which can make day-to-day living far easier than in Sydney or Melbourne.

The city has a strong outdoor culture, with harbourfront dining, open-air markets, national parks, fishing, boating and weekend escapes all close by. Darwin is also recognised for its multicultural food scene and proximity to Asia, which gives the city a very distinctive feel.

For doctors relocating with family, the lifestyle can be particularly appealing because it offers more balance, more space and easy access to nature. Litchfield National Park, waterfront sunsets, the Mindil Beach markets and the broader Top End landscape all add to the appeal of living and working there. NT Government relocation material also highlights shorter commutes, broader career opportunities and, in some areas, lower living costs than the national average.

This is a standout opportunity for a Neurosurgeon seeking a senior-level role with genuine clinical scope, influence, and lifestyle upside in one of Australia’s most unique practice settings.
