Job Title:

Neurophysiology Tech III-Children's of MississippiPerforms routine and complex neurophysiological procedures (EEG/EP/NCS). Performs intra-operative neurophysiological monitoring studies. Assists in department administration. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in neurodiagnostics (EEG/EMG), and two applicable registrations, or
associates degree and four years experience in neurodiagnostics (EEG/EMG) and two applicable registrations.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration required BLS certification, must possess two of the following registrations: EEG or ep by the American Board of Registered Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist (ABRET), NCS by the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologist (AAET), or equivalent registration.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of the functions and disorders of the nervous system and the principles and practical applications of neurodiagnostic testing. Knowledge of the principles and practical applications of neurodiagnostic testing. Interpersonal skills to interact with patients, family members, and staff. Ability to recognize normal and abnormal electrical activity. Ability to comprehend computer averaging and data acquisition.

Responsibilities

  • Develops a rapport with patients and explains testing procedures to the patient; prepares patient for testing.
  • Obtains and records patient medical history. Completes required paperwork for testing and initiates changes as required.
  • Performs standard and complex neurodiagnostic procedures in the laboratory, ICU, and CCU. Maintains proper standards for application of EEG electrotrodes.
  • Performs all phases of EEG testing, evoked potentials, nerve conduction studies, intra-operative monitoring, and brainstem monitoring to include hook-up, reading, and scoring of the patient.
  • Maintains instrumentation and equipment in proper working order, checking calibrations and making minor maintenance adjustments and repairs deemed appropriate.
  • Participates in training junior personnel. Ensures adherence to laboratory policies and procedures regarding OSHA and JCAHO guidelines and hospital regulations; promotes continuous improvement in safety, environmental, and/or infection control practices and procedures.

Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
