He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience (HWFR) department is dedicated to managing, planning, and developing stormwater systems. We work collaboratively with iwi and communities to future-proof Auckland’s water, ensuring healthy environments and resilient stormwater systems.

We are seeking passionate and motivated interns to join our Network Solutions team. As a Healthy Waters and Flood Resilience Intern, you will support our team in working behind the scenes to help big infrastructure and housing projects across Auckland happen, even when things get tricky!

Our team delivers three key programmes, and as an intern, you’ll have the chance to support different parts of each.

• Network Upgrade Programme: We help get access to land and funding, so pipes and drains can be built where needed through a novel statutory framework
• Haumanu Programme: We deliver stream and river enhancement projects and track those environmental benefits, enabling developers and organisations to meet their regulatory offset requirements.
• HWFR Support Programme: We support stormwater and flood resilience projects by helping with commercial and property negotiations and agreements, and by helping to resolve customer disputes.

Our team works with organisations like Kāinga Ora, KiwiRail, NZTA, and Watercare, so you’ll see how all the big players come together to make Auckland work.

What you’ll be doing during your internship

During your 12-week internship, you’ll be part of the Network Solutions Team, supporting mahi that contributes to the planning and delivery of stormwater and flood resilience projects.

Your work may include:

• Researching and reviewing property files and access agreements
• Overseeing and refining a statutory process, including liaising with Water Service Commissioners
• Supporting customer communications and admin
• Attending meetings with project managers and engineers
• Learning how council plans and delivers large public stormwater works
• Gaining exposure to real-world environmental, legal and property issues

He kōrero mōu: About you

You have a keen interest in property law, infrastructure delivery, and how legal processes support environmental outcomes, and you're motivated to gain hands-on experience in this space. You bring strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude, along with a developing understanding of property law, planning frameworks and public sector processes.

Your ability to analyse information, stay organised, and work collaboratively will help the team deliver complex stormwater projects and navigate property-related challenges. You may have some experience with legal research tools, property databases, or Microsoft Office, and you’re keen to build these technical skills further.

A valid New Zealand Driver’s license for this role is preferred but not essential
