Job Description

The Sr Network Engineer is a senior-level technical role responsible for leading advanced network operations, engineering, and infrastructure improvements across corporate, retail, and cloud environments. This position owns the resolution of high-impact and complex network incidents, provides technical leadership across multi-site connectivity and security initiatives, and ensures the network environment remains stable, secure, and scalable. The role works within established standards and change control processes while contributing to architecture, modernization planning, operational maturity, and mentoring Level 1 and Level 2 engineers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead resolution of Tier 3 network incidents and outages involving complex LAN/WAN, SD-WAN, firewall, and wireless issues across multiple locations.
  • Perform deep technical troubleshooting including advanced routing/switching analysis, packet capture review, and root cause analysis.
  • Own deployment standards for network technologies including configuration templates, security baselines, and operational best practices.
  • Architect, implement, and support enterprise network solutions across retail and corporate environments, ensuring scalability and performance.
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for Fortinet platforms including FortiGate, FortiSwitch, FortiAP, FortiNAC, and centralized management through FortiManager.
  • Lead FortiNAC administration and policy enforcement across wired and wireless environments, including endpoint profiling, automated onboarding workflows, quarantine/remediation actions, and integration with FortiGate/FortiSwitch/FortiAP to strengthen visibility and network access control.
  • Lead and improve network monitoring strategy (e.g., PRTG and enterprise alerting) including KPI-driven tuning, noise reduction, and proactive detection.
  • Support and optimize SD-WAN design, circuit failover strategy, WAN performance validation, and application pathing improvements.
  • Partner with internal teams, vendors, and service providers to drive resolution for complex carrier issues, circuit migrations, and store-level connectivity escalations.
  • Lead network project execution including store openings, refresh initiatives, platform standardization, security improvements, and circuit modernization.
  • Develop and maintain network documentation including diagrams, implementation standards, site templates, troubleshooting guides, and network lifecycle processes.
  • Provide technical mentorship to Level 1 and Level 2 engineers, including training support, troubleshooting coaching, and review of technical work.
  • Participate in change planning, maintenance windows, and risk assessments to ensure minimal business disruption and controlled execution.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to increase network stability, reduce downtime, and improve service delivery across the organization.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expert-level understanding of enterprise networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, routing protocols, VLAN design, subnetting, WAN technologies, and wireless architecture.
  • Strong experience troubleshooting and supporting multi-site retail networks at scale, including high availability and business-critical connectivity requirements.
  • Strong firewall and security knowledge including policy design, NAT, segmentation, and VPN technologies.
  • Strong experience administering FortiNAC to enforce enterprise network access control, including endpoint profiling, policy design, agentless/agent-based onboarding, guest/BYOD workflows, remediation/quarantine rules, and integration with Fortinet infrastructure (FortiGate/FortiSwitch/FortiAP) to improve visibility, compliance, and security across wired and wireless environments.
  • Experience leading technical projects and producing clear documentation, standards, and operational procedures.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical teams, vendors, and business stakeholders during incident response and project execution.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage, and execute in a fast-paced environment supporting multiple locations and simultaneous initiatives.
  • Ability to travel to retail locations as needed (occasional based on business needs).
  • Ability to participate in after-hours/on-call support as scheduled.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in network operations and engineering roles supporting enterprise infrastructure.
  • Strong experience with Fortinet technologies preferred (FortiGate, FortiSwitch, FortiAP, FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, FortiNAC).
  • Experience supporting SD-WAN, carrier troubleshooting, and large-scale multi-site environments preferred.
  • Professional certifications preferred (two or more): CCNP, Fortinet NSE certifications, Network+.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs (network equipment, boxes, peripherals).
  • Ability to bend, crouch, and work in small network closets or under counters when required.
