The Network Engineer is responsible for supporting the network infrastructure, administration of equipment, such as routers, switches and firewalls, and maintaining the unified communications telephony system. Provides expert consultation and customer service to the users of data and telecommunications network services and systems. Monitors and runs diagnostics on the organization’s network infrastructure. Consults with local and regional network operations staff and service providers in order to facilitate problem resolution within the university campus infrastructure, its wide-area networks and the Internet. Analyzes and implements appropriate solutions to operational problems. Identifies existing and emerging technologies and evaluates applicability.
Support of network infrastructure and administration of equipment, such as routers, switches, firewalls and VPN
Configuring, troubleshooting network hardware in Miami Shores, and traveling to all Barry University Remote sites as needed for any network infrastructure related installations or equipment removal or relocation
Provide Level-2/3 support and troubleshooting to resolve issues
Configuring new network hardware, maintaining existing hardware (upgrading software images service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations), replacing failed equipment and decommissioning equipment.
Monitoring network performance and ensure system availability and reliability.
Monitoring system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning
Creating trouble tickets for hardware issues with any network hardware manufacturer support team and follow through until resolution
Ensuring backup UPS devises are present and functioning in all hub rooms where equipment resides
Assisting with day-to-day issues that may occur with managed wireless service provider, troubleshooting network events that may degrade wireless connectivity and coordinating new wireless upgrades and projects
Support for IT disaster recovery events such as hurricanes or any unplanned outages
Performing cabling functions, including installs, terminations, runs and cable management.
Ensuring adequate inventory of materials, such as cables and equipment.
Administering firewall, making changes as needed and troubleshooting and resolving issues
Responding to infringement notices as needed
Configuring routers and VPN devices for site-site VPN
Work with users and other personnel for problem resolution
Monitoring incidents and requests and ensuring resolution within published SLAs.
Assist in the maintenance of the University unified communications telephony systems
Maintenance of the university IP based unified communications system
Installation, maintenance, replacement or repair of voice communications equipment
Work with outside contractors and vendors engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of telephony equipment and software
Assist with receipt and installation of voice communication hardware, software and associated devices.
Assist with the inventory of voice and data communication lines supporting the Unified Communications System.
Creating and maintaining the network infrastructure and core network documentation by:
Maintaining current network infrastructure diagrams
Creating building floor plans for all managed areas
Updating floor plans to reflect any new construction modifications in areas
Update floor plans to reflect location and number of available network connections per area.
Maintenance of Galaxy access control systems
Troubleshooting Galaxy software and access control hardware
Working with outside contractors and vendors engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of access control equipment and software.
Administration of IPTV service
Configuring new Xfinity cable boxes and troubleshooting existing installed boxes on campus
Performs other job related duties as assigned or required.
This position requires occasional travel to remote sites.
The position requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for project implementations and special event support
Position is on call 24/7 and is required to use available technology to monitor all network systems attached to the
University’s network.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or Technology related field.
Experience may substitute for some of the above education: Five to 10 years of experience in network administration.
Cisco CCNA Certification or higher
3-5 years of work-related experience is required.
Working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to use in varied situations.
Advanced analytical skills are needed to identify, troubleshoot and resolve network issues in this position
This position requires excellent project management skills, and the ability to follow through all processes to completion.
This position requires generating and maintaining documentation for several aspects of the university's network, as well as inventories and building floor plans.
Must know how to operate general network equipment, several specialized network infrastructure diagnostic devices, and standard hardware tools.
The position requires great written communication skills to submit trouble tickets and document processes. Great oral communication skills are also needed to explain issues to external support teams, as well as correspond with end users.
