Position Summary
The System Administrator supports SFBU’s secure, reliable, and modern technology environment by administering network, server, cloud, identity, security, and enterprise application platforms. The role serves as a key technical resource for Digital Infrastructure Services and Tier 2 infrastructure support, combining hands-on infrastructure administration with application support, automation, cybersecurity, documentation, and end-user service.
The successful candidate will be comfortable using AI-assisted tools, scripting, and automation to improve IT operations while applying appropriate security, privacy, and change-management practices.
This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site position based at our Fremont, California, campus.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Core Systems, Network, and Security Administration
- Install, configure, monitor, and maintain network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, wireless networks, and related services.
- Perform regular backups, recovery operations, and system upgrades to maintain robust system availability.
- Administer enterprise firewall platforms and approved network security policies, including network segmentation, NAT, remote-access/site-to-site VPNs, traffic analysis, firmware updates, vulnerability remediation, and troubleshooting.
- Monitor system and network performance, investigate alerts and security incidents, and analyze logs and network usage to maintain availability, performance, and security.
- Administer physical and virtual servers; perform patching, upgrades, backup and recovery operations, capacity monitoring, and security hardening.
- Endpoint management for Core Systems responsibilities, including Windows/macOS management, software deployment, patching, device policies, and lifecycle management.
- Manage cloud resources such as AWS and Microsoft Azure in alignment with institutional security and operational requirements.
- Administer identity and access controls, including SSO, MFA, privileged access, account lifecycle, and role-based access.
- Troubleshoot complex network, server, endpoint, application, and connectivity issues and coordinate with vendors when escalation is required.
Application Administration
- Administer Google Workspace, including users, organizational units, groups, shared drives, Gmail settings, security controls, 2-Step Verification, administrative roles, reporting, and troubleshooting.
- Support enterprise SaaS and campus applications, ensuring secure configuration, availability, integrations, licensing, and alignment with academic and business needs.
- Administer and support Canvas LMS, including user and account administration, roles and permissions, courses and subaccounts, authentication, integrations, LTI applications, reporting, troubleshooting, and coordination with academic and administrative departments.
- Develop, test, and document application configurations, upgrades, integrations, and operational procedures.
- Maintain technical documentation, knowledge-base articles, system diagrams, standard operating procedures, and end-user guidance.
- Partner with departments to understand business processes and translate requirements into secure, maintainable system improvements.
- Provide technical support for Salesforce integrations with other institutional systems, including Canvas LMS, Google Workspace, identity platforms, and other enterprise applications if needed.
Automation, Scripting, and AI-Enabled IT Operations
- Use PowerShell and other scripting or command-line tools to automate repetitive administrative tasks, reporting, configuration, account management, and troubleshooting.
- Improve IT workflows through automation, APIs, integrations, and low-code/no-code tools while maintaining appropriate controls and documentation.
- Use approved AI tools responsibly to accelerate technical research, troubleshooting, documentation, data analysis, scripting, knowledge creation, and operational workflows.
- Evaluate AI-generated output for accuracy, security, privacy, and institutional policy compliance before implementation or distribution.
- Explore practical uses of AI and automation that improve IT service quality, consistency, and efficiency.
Technical Support, Projects, and Collaboration
- Provide responsive technical support for system, network, security, and application issues across a diverse campus community.
- Participate in technology projects, upgrades, deployments, security initiatives, and cross-functional committee work.
- Provide technical guidance for business-process improvements and support other IT Services team members as needed.
- Coordinate with vendors and service providers for implementation, troubleshooting, licensing, support, and lifecycle management.
- Perform additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- At least 3 years of related system, network, cloud, security, or enterprise application administration experience; higher education experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of relevant experience, training, and education may be considered.
- Hands-on experience administering network infrastructure and firewalls, including security policies, VPNs, routing, troubleshooting, and firmware/security updates.
- Hands-on experience administering Google Workspace in an organizational environment, including user lifecycle, groups, security settings, administrative roles, and troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of Windows Server, virtualization, endpoint management, patching, backup/recovery, and identity/access management concepts.
- Practical PowerShell scripting experience and the ability to use scripting, APIs, or automation tools to improve IT operations.
- Familiarity with modern AI tools and demonstrated ability to use AI responsibly for technical research, documentation, scripting, analysis, and workflow improvement.
- Understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals, including least privilege, MFA, SSO, vulnerability management, logging, incident response, and secure configuration practices.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with higher education technologies such as learning management systems, classroom/AV platforms, print management, endpoint management, RMM/MDM, or IT service management systems.
- A service-oriented and professional approach, with a genuine interest in supporting students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more relevant industry certifications are a plus, including Google Workspace Administrator, Microsoft, AWS/Azure, Palo Alto Networks, Cisco/Aruba, Salesforce Administrator, or comparable certifications.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- The employee is required to crouch, walk, reach, grasp, carry, and push.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit or stand for long periods.
Salary: $48.72 - $58.97 per hour
