Under the supervision of the Director of Information technology the Network Analyst is responsible for the installation, layout, and maintenance of all network components. He/she plans, designs, analyzes, and provides technical support for data communications network or group of networks. Conducts research and evaluation of network technology and recommend purchases of network equipment.

In addition, the Network Analyst handles the day-to-day computer duties of an organization. He/she manages the company's servers, which involves installing computer hardware and software, performing upgrades and repairs and taking security measures to protect the network from cyber-attacks. He/she troubleshoots any problems with the network or individual employee workstations and provides technical support to various users.

Examples of duties

DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

Consults with users and evaluates requirements, recommends designs, provides cost analysis, plans projects, and coordinates tasks for installation of data networks.

Analyzes and resolves technical problems for established networks.

Plans, tests, recommends, and implements network, file server, mainframe, and workstation hardware and software.

Provides network documentation, training, and guidance to computing system clients and programmers.

Serves as technical specialist in network problems and emergencies.

Troubleshoots and resolves network production problems.

Conducts technical research on network upgrades and components to determine feasibility, cost, time required, and compatibility with current system

Recommends network solutions for short-, medium-, and long-range network projects.

Installs, configures and maintains network components

Determines plan layout for new hardware or modifications to existing layout.

Installs, upgrades, and configures network printing, directory structures, user access, security, software, and file services.

Establish user profiles, user environments, directories, and security for networks being installed.

Work as a team member with other technical staff, such as systems to ensure connectivity and compatibility between systems

Works with vendors to resolve complex network problems.

Maintains confidentiality with regard to the information being processed, stored or accessed by the network.

Documents network problems and resolutions for future reference.

Assists personnel of other departments as a computer resource Oversees the installation of hardware and software.

Provides on-the-job training to new department staff members.

Provides computer orientation to new company staff.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree in computer science and three (3) years network experience.

OR

An Associate's Degree in computer science and five (5) years network experience

Supplemental information

FACTOR 1 - KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of company supported network platforms such as Novell and Windows NT.
Work with users requires interpersonal skills.
Excellent problem-solving, analytical and evaluative skills.
Ability to design and coordinate the installation of data networks.
Ability to maintain and troubleshoot computer network hardware, software, and peripherals.
Ability to provide a range of systems training and/or support activities for users.
Ability to develop and write systems and applications documentation and guides for users.

Ability to learn and support new network components.
FACTOR 2 - SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The incumbent is expected to perform with considerable independence of action and exercise a high degree of initiative and creativity. The director of the unit provides technical and administrative supervision through review of reports and assignments for the soundness of technical judgments and adherence to policy.
FACTOR 3 - GUIDELINES
Guidelines include general standards and directives, as established within the industry and the user agency. The incumbent is expected to exercise judgment and independence within the major duty areas.
FACTOR 4 - COMPLEXITY
The incumbent is responsible for organizing and conducting the installation and modification of the network system or for major components of more highly complex network system. This work requires the ability to evaluate, install and resolve complex problems within the operation of network systems.
FACTOR 5 SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of the work is to provide guidance regarding installation, modification, planning, and coordination of all network related activities of the computer unit. It is also to make recommendation to management regarding the purchasing of any work related computer equipment.
FACTOR 6 - PERSONAL CONTACTS
Contacts are made with network support personnel and entire staff. Contacts are also made with upper management and vendor representatives.
FACTOR 7 - PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
To obtain or supply information.
FACTOR 8 - PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Specific agility and dexterity are required, as well as the physical exertion involved in the work such as climbing stairs, lifting boxes of computers or computer peripherals etc.
FACTOR 9 - WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is mostly performed in an office setting, where temperature may fluctuate, depending on the work the incumbent is performing.
