Net Metering Specialist
ION Solar is a rapidly expanding, full-service residential solar company with a strong nationwide presence. Our dedicated team is committed to making solar energy accessible and affordable for homeowners across the country.
ION Solar is seeking a detail-oriented Net Metering Specialist with solar industry experience to join our team. This customer-facing role is responsible for preparing, submitting, and managing residential net metering applications with utility companies while keeping homeowners informed throughout the process. The ideal candidate understands the solar project lifecycle, communicates clearly and professionally, and is comfortable tracking multiple projects while ensuring applications are accurate and completed on time.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and submit net metering applications for residential solar projects to utility companies.
- Review project documents and system information for accuracy and completeness before submission.
- Monitor applications throughout the utility review and approval process.
- Provide customers with clear, timely updates regarding their net metering application, outstanding requirements, expected timelines, and next steps.
- Communicate with customers professionally by phone, email, and other approved communication channels.
- Respond to customer questions and explain utility requirements or delays in an understandable manner.
- Follow up with utility companies regarding application statuses, outstanding requirements, and approval timelines.
- Respond to utility rejections or correction requests and provide the necessary documentation or updates.
- Maintain accurate project statuses, notes, dates, customer communications, and documentation in internal systems.
- Identify missing information or potential delays and coordinate with customers and internal departments to resolve them.
- Communicate application updates, requirements, and concerns clearly to internal teams.
- Manage multiple projects and utility requirements while meeting established deadlines, communication standards, and productivity expectations.
- Stay informed about utility-specific net metering requirements, processes, and policy changes.
- Assist with special projects and other department needs as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the residential solar project lifecycle and net metering process.
- Strong customer-service skills and the ability to communicate professionally with homeowners.
- Ability to explain complex utility requirements, project updates, and delays in clear and approachable language.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage a high volume of projects with different requirements and deadlines.
- Ability to identify issues, research requirements, and develop effective solutions.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable learning and navigating multiple computer systems, utility portals, and internal platforms.
- Ability to type at least 45 words per minute.
Education and Experience
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Previous solar industry experience is required.
- Previous experience with net metering, interconnection, utility applications, permitting, or a related solar operations function is strongly preferred.
- Previous customer-service experience is required.
- Experience working with utility companies or utility application portals is preferred.
- Administrative, data-entry, or project-coordination experience is preferred.
Working Conditions
Fast-paced, open-floor office environment with significant computer and phone usage. This position requires the use of multiple systems, and both speed and accuracy are essential to the successful completion of assigned tasks.
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer are required. The employee will regularly be required to talk or hear and may frequently be required to stand, walk, reach, bend, or lift up to 20 pounds. The noise level is typical of an office environment, and interruptions may occur throughout the workday.
