Job Description

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) RN will provide nursing services in support of Walter Reed Nathional Medical Center, Bethesda MD.

Education: The NICU RN shall meet the education standards that apply to all healthcare providers:

  • Degree/Education: Earn a Diploma (AD or BSN) from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: RN with a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Must have BLS, S.T.A.B.L.E, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) renewed every 2 years
  • Licensure/Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse

Qualifications

  • Experience: Possess at least two years of concurrent full-time Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience within the last three years. Maintain qualifications and skills of a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse. Skills must be verified by the contracting clinical manager.

Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Competency Verification: Prior to performing independent patient care, the contract RN shall

successfully complete the following mandatory requirements. The timelines herein are firm and

sequential.

1. Prerequisite Training:

  • o Neonatal Medication Test: Successfully pass the MTF's neonatal medication administration exam/competency.

2. Phase A: Initial Unit Orientation:

  • Timeline: This phase shall be completed within the first three (3) scheduled shifts.
  • Scope: This orientation covers the essential familiarization required for basic, safe practice on the unit, including unit layout, emergency procedures, core equipment, and fundamental documentation workflows.

3. Phase B: Full Competency Verification:

  • Timeline: The comprehensive, final unit-specific competency skills checklist shall be completed and documented within sixty (60) days of the employee's unit start date.
  • Scope: This phase ensures the RN demonstrates and is verified as proficient in all required high-acuity skills, procedures, and complex care scenarios for the NICU.
