We are seeking to connect with a Non-Destructive Testing Officer to join our Townsville team on a permanent full time basis. As a Non-Destructive Testing Officer (NDT Officer) you will be working in a team of two, you and the Senior NDT Officer who you’ll be mentoring. You will be required to test various aspects of rail infrastructure specialising on the rail itself. The key focus is ensuring a safety focused team, followed by ensuring a timely and high-quality testing regime is met.

  • 8/6 roster (8 on 6 off)

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Perform field NDT on rail assets. Carry out ultrasonic, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, and other non‑destructive tests on rail welds, wheel burns, squats, and any suspect rail or track components, following approved standards.
  • Identify and report defects. Classify, size, document, and formally report all defects discovered during testing.
  • Initiate safety actions for defective rails. Apply emergency speed restrictions when required and notify Infrastructure Maintenance teams to ensure timely repairs.
  • Supervise automated NDT vehicle operations. Use Category 3 driving skills to pilot and oversee contractor‑operated automated testing vehicles within the assigned district.
  • Plan and execute manual testing programs. Conduct manual NDT in response to welding, derailments, rail replacement, and proactive inspection requirements.
  • Perform targeted inspections as needed to support infrastructure safety.
  • Record defects and repairs in SAP.

Hours:

76 hour fortnight with rosters to suit the preferred applicant.

  • Drivers licence (mandatory)
  • Passion for ensuring a safe work environment
  • Ability to work as part of a small team.
  • Proactive approach and initiative to solve problems
  • Ability to travel across Mt Isa Line and Cairns to Saint Lawrence.
  • Knowledge of track construction, maintenance, degradation mechanisms and rail defects.
  • Understanding of rail welding methods and rail weld repair methods.
  • Sound literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Sound level of skill in the use of PC based applications including Microsoft Word, Excel and SAP.
