NDT Level 2 Inspector / Laboratory Technician
Location: Loos & Co. – Pomfret Center, CT
Department: Quality / Engineering
Reports To: Anna McDonald

The NDT Level 2 Inspector / Laboratory Technician plays a key role in supporting manufacturing, engineering, quality, product development, and customer requirements. This position is responsible for performing laboratory testing, non-destructive testing, failure analysis, and inspection activities to evaluate the quality and integrity of materials and finished products.
The position will specialize in Penetrant (PT) testing and will perform inspections in accordance with applicable industry standards, customer specifications, and internal procedures. The role also supports engineering investigations, process and product improvement, research and development, and customer-related investigations.
The successful candidate must be highly detail-oriented, safety-conscious, analytical, and capable of accurately documenting and communicating test results and findings.
Essential Job Functions
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty efficiently and safely. The employee will work closely with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and other levels of the organization in a team-oriented environment and take personal accountability for completing assigned tasks.
Non-Destructive Testing / Inspection
• Perform NDT inspections, with a primary focus on Liquid Penetrant (PT) testing, in accordance with NAS 410, applicable industry standards, customer specifications, and internal procedures.
• Prepare and clean parts and components prior to inspection.
• Set up, operate, calibrate, and maintain NDT equipment used for penetrant inspections.
• Perform inspections accurately and consistently while identifying and evaluating surface discontinuities and defects.
• Interpret inspection requirements, specifications, drawings, procedures, and acceptance criteria.
• Evaluate and document inspection results in accordance with applicable requirements.
• Identify nonconforming conditions and communicate findings to appropriate personnel.
• Maintain required NDT inspection records, certifications, and documentation.
• Support investigations involving product quality, process issues, and field/customer failures.
• Maintain NDT equipment and inspection areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
Laboratory Testing and Analysis
• Collect, prepare, label, organize, and test samples and specimens.
• Perform laboratory procedures and routine testing in support of Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, and Research & Development.
• Record, analyze, and interpret test data accurately.
• Interpret industry specifications and requirements applicable to routine laboratory testing.
• Utilize image analysis software and other computer-based tools for testing, analysis, reporting, and documentation.
• Conduct and support scientific investigations, experiments, and engineering projects.
• Participate in failure analysis activities to evaluate internal, field, and customer failures.
• Operate, monitor, and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Maintain samples throughout the testing and evaluation process.
• Update databases, records, work logs, and other required documentation.
• Assist engineers with ongoing projects, product development, process improvement, and customer investigations.
• Present laboratory capabilities and processes to visitors and facility tours when requested.
Documentation, Security, and Compliance
• Accurately document all testing, inspection, and laboratory results and maintain records in accordance with company and customer requirements.
• Maintain confidentiality and security of company and customer data and proprietary information.
• Ensure documentation is organized and readily retrievable.
• Follow applicable quality management system requirements, procedures, work instructions, and industry standards.
• Protect company information and systems by following cybersecurity and data security practices, including recognizing and reporting phishing and social engineering attempts.
• Lock computer workstations whenever leaving the laboratory or inspection area.
• Report unsafe, unprofessional, or unauthorized activity within the laboratory or inspection areas.
• Maintain required certifications and training.
Safety and Housekeeping
• Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Practice safe laboratory and inspection procedures at all times.
• Properly handle chemicals, laboratory materials, specimens, and equipment.
• Wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses/goggles, safety shoes, gloves, and other PPE as required.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and inspection work area.
• Immediately report safety hazards, equipment concerns, spills, or other unsafe conditions.
• Work collaboratively with others while maintaining a professional and safety-conscious environment.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
• Current NAS 410 NDT Level 2 certification in Liquid Penetrant (PT) inspection.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to detect and evaluate small or minute defects.
• Ability to accurately follow written procedures, specifications, and inspection criteria.
• Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations accurately.
• Moderate computer skills for data entry, analysis, and reporting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Dependable, punctual, organized, and capable of working independently.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Commitment to safe and efficient work practices.
Preferred
• Two-year technical associate degree in Engineering, Laboratory Technology, Mathematics, or another related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Previous laboratory experience.
• Previous aerospace manufacturing or inspection experience.
• Experience with failure analysis and material/product testing.
• Experience with image analysis software.
• Knowledge of applicable aerospace, NDT, laboratory, and quality standards.
