The NC Lathes #1 operator sets up and operates multi-axis numerically controlled (NC) and computer numerically controlled (CNC) lathe machine tools. Performs various combinations of lathe operations such as turning, facing, boring, threading, drilling, reaming, contouring, etc. on metal forgings, castings, bar stock, etc. May operate and maintain set up of welding machines, or robots that weld. Follows established company policies, directives, military specifications, blueprints, and process sheet directives.
Searches to and makes appropriate program active, and/or loads machine routine into the CNC computer on machines equipped with multi-programmed storage. Establishes work shift and tool offsets as they relate to the work-piece (tape) memory interface. Locate and align steady rests per process instruction.
Reviews process sheet specifications to determine sequence of set-up operations and dimensions of finished work-piece. Insures that all required tooling and precision measuring equipment is available and on–hand. Sets-up lathe and positions work-piece in collets, chucks, or fixtures according to set-up instructions and secures work-piece in place.
Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tools in turret position according to established procedures. Monitors cutting tool wear to establish need for tool change. Observes metal cutting action to verify proper metal removal. Verifies gages are in working order and are not overdue for calibration.
Verifies conformance of machined workpiece to specifications using fixed gages, microhite, surface plates, dial gages, micrometers, dial calipers, go and no-go gages, etc. Adjusts and corrects tools offsets and compensations. May adjust machine feed and speed and change cutters to machine parts according to specifications only when automatic programming is faulty or if machine malfunctions.
Practices safety and good housekeeping policies and procedures. Perform operator tasks according to the machine’s process maintenance checklist to ensure that the machine is in proper working order, and to record information as instructed.
