Job Description

Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging Summer Camp environment!

Lake Rickabear Day Camp sits on 332 acres of land including a beautiful 40-acre, spring-fed lake, perfect for swimming, pedal boating, paddle boarding, and row boating.

The Nature Specialist will develop and deliver nature and environmental activities that are safe, fun and appropriate to the campers' age and abilities while reflecting the Girl Scout commitment to stewardship of the natural environment. This will include teaching classes and helping the counselors do nature activities on their own.

Immediate Supervisor: Program Director

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Attends all sessions required of position at Pre-Camp Orientation.
  • Teaches classes providing fun, informative, skill-building, nature-based lessons for children.
  • Provides safety orientation to equipment and safety procedures.
  • Provides resources for unit staff to develop unit nature games, lessons and programs.
  • Set up and keep nature center in clean, organized, and safe order.
  • Set up samples of available programs with directions.
  • Provides some pre-camp training: teach staff some activities and give information on activities available.
  • Begins and continues file of ideas and directions for nature programs.
  • Submits seasonal report and evaluation of program activities.
  • Promotes high camper and staff morale.
  • Teaches archery and slingshot lessons as needed.
  • Must be able to stay and sleep over for at least one out of the three overnights.
  • Follow all procedures established in the Camp Communicable Disease Plan to mitigate risks associated with communicable diseases including Covid19 .
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Daily Rate: $123 (new staff) - $128 per day (returning staff). This is based on a 7.5 hour work day, which translates to $16.40 - $17.07 per hour respectively

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years of age.
  • Be able to generate interest in the outdoors among campers by developing and delivering an age-appropriate nature program. Examples of topics within the nature program might include nature exploration, astronomy, water studies, outdoor cooking, hiking, orienteering, and fire building.
  • Applicants should have a love of the outdoors, knowledge of natural history, and experience teaching children about nature.
  • Willing to be certified in archery (training and certification provided by camp).
  • Hold or be willing to obtain current certification of standard First Aid and CPR (training to be provided).

Physical Requirements

  • Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in a rustic camp environment with limited access to electricity, cell phone service and internet.
