Natural Gas Pipefitter Specialist Fort Carson

Colorado Springs Utilities, Fort Carson Operations and Construction, is excited to offer the opportunity for a safety-oriented and motivated journey-level Gas Pipefitter Specialist to join our team. Our pipefitters are responsible for various natural gas pipeline installations and maintenance duties. This includes gas commercial meter work, inspecting contractors during the installation of mains and services, and providing input with future gas system design requirements. Additionally, pipefitters are responsible for ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and safety procedures pertaining to the natural gas industry; maintaining records of work performed and materials used; training personnel; operating construction equipment to install new piping and to expose existing piping; pinpointing the location of leaks and classifying type, and ensuring that underground utilities have been located and job sites are safe by using proper barricades. The Gas Pipefitter Specialist will support gas distribution activities related to the construction, operations, and maintenance of the Fort Carson gas distribution system in support of the Intergovernmental Support Agreement (IGSA).


Under the Intergovernmental Support Agreement (IGSA), Colorado Springs Utilities is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of Fort Carson’s water, electric and gas infrastructure. Beginning in January 2026 wastewater collections and industrial sewer will become the fourth service operated and maintained by the Fort Carson Operations and Construction in accordance with the IGSA. You will work daily on-site at Fort Carson, but may be called to support Colorado Springs Utilities’ natural gas teams in the event of major emergencies.

The position will be filled at the Gas Pipefitter Specialist level. The starting pay rate for a Gas Pipefitter Specialist is $46.33/hr. Your pay rate will increase to $48.64/hr. upon successfully completing probation (typically 6 months).

Essential Functions of the job include, but are not limited to:

Assists with performing or coordinating aspects of Fort Carson's natural gas distribution system operations and maintenance, including valve inspections, construction projects, cathodic protection inspections, quality control inspection of new infrastructure, gas commercial meter work, regulator station maintenance, leak search, leak repair, and other requirements to meet regulatory requirements. Must have the ability to be adaptable and flexible to help transition Fort Carson's current operations and maintenance practices to industry best practices.

As a Gas Pipefitter, you will be responsible for:

  • Connecting and inspecting gas mains and service lines
  • Safe handling of gas main/service lines
  • Operating gas construction excavation equipment
  • Learning to perform basic cathodic protection of natural gas mains and services at Fort Carson to include ten percent inspections and reading test stations
  • Operating system valves on/off in support of the valve maintenance program
  • Performing gas leak surveys, including the individual building service lines in Family Housing buildings
  • Tapping pipelines
  • Complying with regulations/laws/procedures
  • Obtaining and Maintaining Operator Qualification Certification
  • Learning how to install, exchange, remove, troubleshoot, and maintain natural gas service points, including meters, modules, and regulators.
  • Knowledge of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems is preferred
  • Knowledge of gas pulse meter systems is preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of gas regulators, including monitor/control setups, is preferred
  • Emerson regulator technician 1100 certification is preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of rotary and turbine gas meters is preferred
  • Repair and replacement of commercial meter sets

Qualified candidates must meet the following requirements and expectations:

  • Completion of a Gas Pipefitter Apprentice program (DOL or NDOL) or have 4 or more years of relevant experience installing and repairing gas mains and service lines (Operator Qualifications, etc.)
  • Additionally, one year of experience at the Journey Gas Pipefitter level is preferred
  • Ability to obtain a NACE CP1 certification
  • Driving a Colorado Springs Utilities commercial vehicle is a requirement of this position; as such, the successful candidate needs to have a Class Commercial Driver's license w/ tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six months of starting
  • The successful candidate will be required to pull periodic stand-by, overtime, weekends, holidays, and 24-hour callouts as the business needs demand. In addition, you will work in hazardous conditions, and be subject to working in inclement weather

In this role, you will be part of a team responsible for a wide range of technical duties and will ensure that all activities adhere to Colorado Springs Utilities' Safety Rules and Construction Standards. Additionally, the position requires regular interaction with numerous internal and external customers as well as proficient management of resources, equipment, and personnel to ensure the successful completion, performance, and review of the natural gas work.
