Job Description

Purpose of Job:

This primary responsibility of this role is to provide leadership and support for fleet operations across the Interstate Batteries system. The major area of focus is to centralize and manage all aspects of a fleet management program with direct responsibility for all company-owned and leased fleet equipment at over 40 locations across the United States with annual operating costs of circa $67M, in addition to supporting over 200 independently-owned Distributors in their fleet management needs.

Job Components:

Strategic:

  • Responsible for building and implementing a national fleet operations program.
  • Implement an asset management strategy for the addition, replacement and disposal of assets.
  • Planning and executing all company fleet lease programs.
  • Manage vendor relationships and negotiations (with direct support from our Indirect Procurement team) for capital and lease equipment.
  • Plan and execute financial budgets for fleet operations.
  • Work closely with our four US & Canada Customer Segment (BU) and Corporate leadership team members to insure national and regional fleet objectives are achieved.
  • Develop cross functional partnerships to drive initiatives and leverage internal resources.
  • Utilize our JD Edwards EAM system to track assets, maintenance expenses and apply life cycle analysis to existing equipment.
  • Develop technical knowledge of the fleet to insure proper use of current and new technologies for delivery and operating efficiencies.
  • Develop, implement, track, and report standard fleet performance metrics including but not limited to fleet utilization rate, CSA scores, indirect hours, PM compliance rates, etc.
  • Utilize the Rapid Continuous Improvement process to streamline fleet activities and processes when needed.
  • Develop an internal and external communication channel to keep abreast of trucking industry changes.

Tactical

  • Responsible for all fleet related DOT, OSHA and EPA regulations.
  • Where relevant, ensure maintenance shops are adequately staffed/scheduled and technicians are properly trained.
  • Develop business plans to improve overall fleet performance.
  • Ensure safe and reliable vehicles are available to meet operational requirements at all times.
  • Develop, implement, manage, and monitor fleet operating policies and procedures.
  • Conduct fleet evaluations to ensure maintenance standards are met.
  • Maintain clean and safe assets and fleet work environments.
  • Manage leasing company fleet and all outside maintenance vendors – monitor repairs and cost to ensure cost-effective programs are in place.
  • Manage preventive maintenance program compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university preferred.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification a strong preference.
  • 7-10 years commercial fleet leadership experience.
  • Have managed all aspects of a national commercial fleet of at least 5,000 assets.
  • Leadership qualities proven through successful financial and tactical fleet operations results.
  • Proven track record of continuous improvement and improved results.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office applications to include PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to influence managers, business partners and key stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable presenting to large audiences and in one-on-one meetings with senior executives.
  • Ability to grow and develop team members.
  • Technical knowledge in fleet industry.
  • Open to input from others. A good team player albeit an SME in all things fleet-related.
  • Exceptional time, project management, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • A team player but also a strong individual contributor with the drive and tenacity that requires little supervision.
  • Demonstrates initiative and drive for results

Work Environment

  • Generally working in an office environment
  • Travel – Up to 10%, based on business needs
