Job Description

The Recovery Specialist delivers person-centered, hands-on recovery support to pregnant and postpartum individuals. The Specialist empowers clients to build recovery skills, strengthen motivation, navigate challenges that affect their stability and wellness, and overcome barriers to achieving self-sufficiency. Drawing on lived experience, the Specialist fosters trust, offers hope, and reinforces a foundation for long-term stability. Through this partnership, the Specialist helps promote healthy pregnancies, strengthen family stability, and advance long-term recovery within the community.

Essential Functions

  • Provide individual face-to-face services in the clients’ homes, their community, or agency office. Accompany clients to behavioral health, medical, and social service appointments, advocate for appropriate services and care, and assist in reducing barriers to accessing care.
  • Provide strength-based rehabilitative and recovery-oriented services. Motivate clients to attain and maintain recovery. Educate clients on harm reduction techniques. Facilitate recovery-oriented discussions with clients.
  • Serve as a role model, mentor, and advocate to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. Share personal experiences to foster a sense of hope and recovery with clients.
  • Support clients in identifying goals, strengths, and personal interests, and develop and implement person-centered recovery plans relevant to the needs of the clients.
  • Ensure coordination of services through collaboration and consultation with other Maternal Wraparound staff, providers, and collateral contacts.
  • Utilize a trauma-informed approach to promote clients’ right to self-determination and provide services in a manner that emphasizes clients’ safety, respect, and dignity. Promote self-advocacy.
  • Participate in community outreach and engagement activities, including presentations and community meetings.
  • Become a Narcan responder and dispenser by attending training and becoming certified in dispensation of Narcan. Train clients in the use of Narcan and provide kits and guidance on proper procedures of use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • NYS Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) or Certified Recovery Peer Advocate – Provisional (CRPA-P) with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience, or
  • NYS Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Trainee (CASAC-T) with 5,000 of the required 6,000 hours for CASAC credential completed (must be exam-ready with all but 1,000 or less work experience hours left to complete)
  • Lived experience with substance use recovery for CRPA.
  • Lived experience in substance use recovery preferred for CASAC-T.

Criteria that would be desirable but not required

  • Bachelor's or Associate’s Degree
  • Experience working with pregnant or postpartum individuals highly preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish is a plus

Salary: $50,000/year
