Schedule Saturdays and Sundays for Masses; special services as assigned

Reports to Coordinator of Music Ministry and Pastor

St. Mark the Evangelist is seeking a talented and experienced organist and pianist. This musician will be responsible for performing music for liturgies and parish services, including hymns, anthems, and special music. The organist/pianist may also be asked to perform at weddings, funerals and other liturgical events as necessary. Our ideal candidate is dedicated, reliable and has a deep appreciation for sacred music. Must have demonstrated experience on the organ and piano. The musician will join our Music Ministry, the goal of which is to engage the faithful in music and song during worship, drawing them into a closer relationship with God.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform music during Masses, including hymns, musical aspects of the Order of Mass, anthems, and special music.
  • Provides musical support to a prayerful environment; fosters a rich musical presence within the parish.
  • Provide accompaniment for the choir and cantors.
  • Attend rehearsals with the choir.
  • When necessary, assist the Coordinator of Music Ministry to plan music for Masses, liturgies and special services.
  • Continuously maintains professional and liturgical education through reading, workshops, classes etc.
  • Is available to perform at special events including weddings, funerals, concerts and other events as needed.
  • Attend any Archdiocesan-required training, and/or meetings on Liturgy and Music.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • High School degree or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a church organist and pianist.
  • Strong knowledge of sacred music.
  • Basic understanding of music theory and the ability to improvise.
  • Ability to sight-read music.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate well with others, especially church staff, and members of the music ministry, choir and parish.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, fostering a positive work experience.
  • Meet all Archdiocesan employment requirements.
  • Provide proof of valid driver’s license and insurance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Liturgy or related field.
  • Previous experience/ knowledge of Roman Catholic Liturgy including the Missal, Order of Mass, or other liturgical documents.
  • Experience maintaining organs and pianos.
  • Fluency in Spanish is desired though not required.
