Position: Teaching Assistant (Music) (Posting Number 2627-3875)

Location: Spry Middle School

Start Date: August 31, 2026

Requirements: Must have NYS Certification as a Teaching Assistant - Level I, Level II or Level III or have NYS certification as a teacher

Accountability: The Music Teacher Assistant is directly responsible to the building principal or their designee. Music Teaching Assistants will also be supervised by the district music administrator.

Nature of the Position: The role of the Music Teaching Assistant is to provide, under the direction of a certified music teacher, specialized and direct instructional and support services to choral music students (i.e. chorus part checks, testing assistance, AV/TV, tiered formative music assessments, daily piano accompaniments, management of chorus materials, and other areas as needed). Because of large class sizes in chorus, the Music Teaching Assistant is integral in differentiating and supporting instruction and monitoring student achievement; they must demonstrate strong musical and piano skills in order to be effective in this work.

Accountability Features:

  • Works with individual students or small groups of students on instructional objectives as directed by a teacher or administrator.
  • Provides the teacher with information about students that will assist in the development of appropriate academic assistance.
  • Assists students in the use of available instructional resources and assists in the development and the use of instructional materials and resources.
  • Shares expertise and training with staff as requested by the building principal or their designee.
  • May supervise groups of students, being responsible for their whereabouts and activities.
  • Attends building and district meetings/workshops as required by the building principal or their designee.
  • Performs such other position-related duties assigned by the building principal or their designee, during unusual or emergency situations.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist with previewing and re-teaching material.
  • Work with small groups on guided practice.
  • Check in with students, to see if they are on task and/or need assistance.
  • Maintain a notebook for each chorus section (including all notes, worksheets, etc.)
  • Create study guides to help students prepare for tests/quizzes.
  • Provide testing accommodations for IEP and 504 students.
  • Communicate with individual chorus teachers to determine specific roles and responsibilities in each class.
  • Assist teachers with technology as needed (i.e. PowerPoint presentations, multimedia information, etc.)
  • Individual support for students: pre-teach, reinforce, re-teach.
  • Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
  • Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods.
  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by chorus teachers.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of music equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
  • Observe students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress.
  • Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students' progress or problems.
  • Plan, prepare, and develop various teaching aids such as sight reading examples, charts, and music worksheets.
  • Carry out therapeutic regimens such as behavior modification and personal development programs, under the supervision of the choral teachers and special eduaction instructors.
