Job Description

Location: Bridgeport Citadel Corps (Bridgeport, CT)

Status: Non-exempt, Part-time

Hours Per Week: 6–10

Schedule: Tuesday & Friday afternoons/evenings & Saturday as needed

Scope of Position: Provide age-appropriate music instruction and educational activities for children enrolled in The Salvation Army Bridgeport Citadel Corps programs. Plan and deliver lessons that develop musical skills, confidence, teamwork, and align with the Corps' programming and mission.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver weekly music classes for children (preschool through middle school), including vocal, basic instrumental (e.g., recorder, ukulele, keyboards), rhythm, and music theory fundamentals.
  • Create lesson plans and curriculum objectives tied to age groups and program goals.
  • Assess student progress and maintain simple records of attendance, skill development, and classroom behavior.
  • Prepare children for Star Search, occasional recitals, holiday programs (Thanksgiving/Christmas), community performances, and Corps events.
  • Coordinate with Corps Officer(s) and coworkers regarding scheduling, space needs, and program promotion.
  • Supervise and train volunteer teaching assistants as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment; manage classroom behavior appropriately.
  • Inventory and care for musical instruments and classroom materials; request supplies or repairs through the Corps Officers.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about student progress, upcoming events, and materials needed.
  • Support fundraising and publicity efforts related to music programs (e.g., concerts, ticketed events).
  • Adhere to all Salvation Army policies, including confidentiality, child protection, and required training.
  • Represent The Salvation Army at conferences and community meetings as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree or certification in music education, music performance, or related field preferred.
  • Experience teaching music to children preferred.
  • Ability to teach basic vocal and instrumental skills and adapt instruction for multiple age groups and abilities.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable leading small ensembles and preparing student performances.
  • Familiarity with basic music-reading, rhythm instruction, and ear-training.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
  • Must complete KeepSAfe and other required training upon hire.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work cooperatively within a faith-based nonprofit environment.
  • Must be available Tuesday and Friday afternoons and weekends, and on occasional weekends for performances.
  • Will respect and promote the interests of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but they are required to promote and respect The Salvation Army's mission.
