About the Client

The Client is an audio streaming platform dedicated to DJ mixes, radio shows, and podcasts. Every quarter, the platform runs a manual study using a random selection of 30-second audio samples from user uploads to determine which record labels and major label groups own the music being streamed. This research helps generate a statistically accurate picture of label usage to support direct reporting to rights holders.

About the Role

This position is for an Outsourced Research Analyst engaged on an hourly basis to handle quarterly, project-based batches with varying sample volumes. The role involves conducting independent desk research through a dedicated web dashboard. Performance and success are evaluated on two core metrics: the number of samples completed per hour and the overall accuracy of the findings against internal checks.

What You’ll Do

• Identify Track Details: Listen to 30-second audio clips and identify the main artist and track title using tools like Shazam, Gracenote audio fingerprints, user tracklists, Spotify, or Apple Music.
• Research Record Labels: Locate the record label or distributor responsible for the track using credits on Spotify, Apple Music, Discogs, Wikipedia, or Beatport.
• Determine Major Label Group: Trace parent company ownership (e.g., Universal, Sony, Warner, Merlin, The Orchard, or Believe/TuneCore) by researching sub-labels, acquisition histories, and distribution channels.
• Submit Detailed Logs: Log result categories (including edge cases like "talk/no music" or "cannot identify") along with mandatory source citations for quality audit purposes.
• Maintain Accuracy Standards: Flag unresolved samples as "cannot identify" rather than guessing, ensuring inaccurate label data is avoided.

What You Bring

Skills & Qualifications:

• Strong written English skills.
• Confident, self-directed web research capabilities.
• Ability to work independently via a web dashboard with minimal supervision.
• Broad familiarity with genres like electronic, house, disco, hip-hop, and world music (helpful, though not essential).

Technical Requirements:

• Google Chrome browser.
• Shazam Chrome extension.
• Spotify and/or Apple Music account (strongly recommended).
• A platform user account (enabled by the client)
