Scope of Position

The Music Instructor supports the mission of The Salvation Army by developing and leading a youth-focused music program that encourages musical skill, creativity, and spiritual growth. This individual will teach music lessons, lead rehearsals, and prepare students to perform in worship services and special events. The ideal candidate demonstrates musical versatility, strong communication skills, and a genuine passion for working with children in a safe, faith-based environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Proficiency in multiple instruments and strong vocal ability — required.
  • Previous experience teaching or mentoring youth in a music setting.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to inspire and engage young people through music and ministry.
  • Alignment with and willingness to support The Salvation Army’s Christian mission and values.
  • Reliable, organized, and able to work independently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach individual and group music lessons for children and youth.
  • Provide instruction in multiple instruments such as brass, piano, guitar, and percussion.
  • Lead vocal training sessions and prepare students to sing or perform during worship services and community events.
  • Encourage students to develop musical discipline and confidence through positive reinforcement and structured learning.
  • Collaborate with corps leadership to plan music curriculum, performances, and schedules.
  • Recruit and mentor volunteers to assist with the music program.
  • Set up and clean up instruments, equipment, and materials before and after classes.
  • Ensure all music activities align with The Salvation Army’s mission and values.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming learning environment for all participants.
  • Attend staff or ministry meetings as requested.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit, stand, and move between teaching areas for the duration of music lessons and rehearsals.
  • Ability to play musical instruments (such as piano, guitar, brass, or percussion) for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and set up musical instruments, stands, and classroom equipment (typically up to 25 pounds).
  • Manual dexterity and coordination required for instrument performance and instruction.
  • Must be able to hear pitch, tone, and rhythm clearly to provide accurate instruction and feedback.
  • Visual acuity required for reading music, lesson materials, and observing student performance.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, kneeling, or stooping may be required during classroom setup or equipment adjustments.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed indoors in a classroom or rehearsal environment at The Salvation Army Bend Corps.
  • Schedule includes 3–5 hours per week, which may involve evenings or weekends depending on class and rehearsal schedules.
  • Occasional participation in off-site performances, community events, or worship services may be required.
  • Moderate noise levels typical of a music instruction setting.
  • Environment requires interaction with children and youth in a safe, supervised, and faith-based setting.
  • May require setup and teardown of instruments, music stands, and audio equipment.
