Summary

The City of Fairfax is seeking an innovative and collaborative transportation professional to join our team as a Multimodal Transportation Planner. This dynamic role plays a key part in shaping the future of mobility in our community while advancing projects and policies that enhance safety, connectivity, and accessibility for all who live, work, and travel in the City.

Under the supervision of the Transportation Director or her designee, this multi-faceted position develops, implements, and monitors the multimodal transportation program in the City of Fairfax. This position includes short- and long-range transportation planning, project development, development review, regional transportation coordination, administration of neighborhood transportation programs and policies, as well as several other functions related to transportation planning and program management. The position works closely with various City departments and City administration and regularly presents to City Council.

Examples of duties

Serves as subject matter expert on bicycle and pedestrian planning and best practices.

Knowledgeable about transit planning and best practices.

Manages the short-and long-range planning for bicycle, pedestrian, transit and scooters.

Implements and oversees multimodal transportation programs (i.e. Capital Bikeshare, scooters).

Collects and monitors performance metric data for city transportation programs and assets (i.e. bus ridership, bike and pedestrian counts).

Manages concept plan development for smaller multimodal capital projects (i.e. sidewalk studies, bus stop improvements).

Works with the transportation capital projects manager on the development and design of transportation improvement projects.

Represents the City on regional transportation groups (Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, TPB Tech Committee, WMATA JCC).

Assists with the preparation of funding applications and City operating and capital budgets.

Assists with communications and public engagement for transportation projects, programs, and events.

Reviews transportation elements of site plans and development applications.

Supports the development and implementation of city-wide long-range plans including the Comprehensive Plan and Small Area Plans.

Manages neighborhood transportation programs and petitions (i.e., Traffic Calming, Residential Permit Parking, New Residential Sidewalks).

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Policy, Public Administration, Engineering, Geography, GIS or related field with at least five years of progressively responsible, related work experience. Local government experience preferred.

Must possess a valid Driver’s License with a good driving record.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong knowledge of principles and best practices of transportation planning, policy and best practices, with specific experience and knowledge in bicycle, pedestrian and/or transit planning.

Strategic, creative and critical thinking, problem solving, and people management skills.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Additional Desirable Qualification:

Master’s degree in related field.

Experience with planning/analysis software and methods such as GIS and statistical analysis.

Knowledge of transportation finance and funding programs, particularly in Virginia.
