Job Description

TITLE: Teacher, Multilingual Learners (ML)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Certified as a Teacher of English Learners by the Delaware Department of Education.
  2. Excellent organizational and management skills
  3. Excellent oral and written communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

REPORTS TO: School Principal (or Assistant)

LOCATION: WT Chipman Middle School

JOB GOAL: To create a flexible multi-language learner program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for ongoing education, in accordance with each student's ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Coordinate a plan in English in the Core Curriculum Content Standards and State of Delaware English Language Proficiency Standards for secondary ML students.
  2. Teach ML students in inclusion and/or self-contained settings where appropriate.
  3. Provide itinerant services for ML students.
  4. Help to identify students that would benefit from ML instruction.
  5. Review all state and local assessment data on ML students to formulate educational strategies and recommendations.
  6. Complete statewide ML database.
  7. Monitor progress of all ML students.
  8. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at times designated.
  9. Develop and deliver lessons utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student's ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow English learners to meaningfully access the district's instructional program.
  10. Help teachers adapt instructional materials as necessary to meet the needs of multilingual learners.
  11. Prepare for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor or principal.
  12. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  13. Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, established clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
  14. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  15. Strive to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  16. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  17. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the law, district policy, and administrative director.
  18. Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  19. Plan and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance.
  20. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  21. Attend staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  22. Other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor that pertain to the position of ML Teacher.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as required by LFEA contract


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten-month work year. Salary and scheduled determined by the Board of Education.


EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.

The following are conditions of employment for new employees:

  1. Satisfactory criminal background check prior to being placed on payroll.
  2. Satisfactory child protection registry check.
  3. Mandatory direct deposit of pay
  4. Documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.
