Location: Cardiff

Position Type: Permanent, full-time

Hours of work: 35 hours per week, worked across a mixture of day and night shifts. Overtime and weekend working may be required to support operational requirements.

The role

With a new state of art infrastructure and recent investment in Vehicle Booking System (VBS) and technology, we are looking for the right individual to join and support our Operations team in Cardiff.

As a Multi Skilled Operative, you will be responsible for loading and unloading HGV vehicles and freight trains using industry-leading lifting equipment, including cranes. You will also carry out the safe arrival and departure of freight trains, and safely conduct train shunting duties in accordance with Local Working Instructions.

You will utilise bespoke technology to support your daily activities, while sharing our culture where health and safety is the number one priority.

This is a safety-critical role. As part of the recruitment process, successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical assessment in accordance with the Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) Regulations (ROGS) and meet the required medical standards for the role.

Key responsibilities

• Operate the gantry cranes, heavy lifting and plant equipment safely and effectively.
• Carry out the safe arrival and departure of freight trains.
• Safely conduct train shunting duties in accordance with Local Working Instructions.
• Check container locking mechanisms.
• Communicate with Yard team and Terminal Coordinators to ensure efficient operations and the timely availability of the correct containers.
• Maintain highest standards of health and safety at all time.

About you

• Be comfortable working at height.
• Have a can-do attitude.
• Be flexible in your approach to working hours and shift patterns. Please note that Saturday working is required on a rota-basis.
• Have a strong understanding of the importance of health and safety and demonstrate a commitment to maintaining safe working practices.

It’s great, but not required, if you:

• Have previous forklift or plant operating experience.
• Have experience working within the rail, container, port or logistics industry.
• Have experience working in a safety-critical environment.
