Job Title: Self-Contained Multi-Categorical / Autism (AU) Teacher

School: Sherman Jr. High School

Contract Type: Full-Time, 200-Day Professional Contract

Reports To: Building Principal

Position Summary

Sherman Jr. High School is seeking a dedicated and highly qualified Self-Contained Multi-Categorical / Autism (AU) Teacher to provide specialized instruction and support for students with a range of disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and other low-incidence or multiple categorical needs. The teacher will create a structured, supportive, and individualized learning environment designed to meet each student's academic, behavioral, communication, social, and adaptive functioning needs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Provide direct, specialized instruction in a self-contained classroom setting aligned to student IEP goals
  • Use evidence-based instructional strategies for students with autism and multiple disabilities, including visual supports, structured teaching, and functional communication systems
  • Implement and manage behavior intervention plans (BIPs) using positive behavioral supports and data-driven practices
  • Conduct ongoing progress monitoring and maintain accurate special education documentation
  • Collaborate with related service providers (speech, OT, PT, behavior specialists) to support student needs
  • Adapt curriculum materials to meet diverse learning and developmental levels
  • Support development of communication, social skills, independence, and functional life skills
  • Create a safe, structured, and predictable classroom environment
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs
  • Participate in IEP meetings, professional learning communities, and school-wide initiatives
  • Supervise instructional assistants/paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom
  • Maintain compliance with IDEA, WVDE policies, and county special education procedures

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid West Virginia Teaching Certification in Multi-Categorical Special Education and Autism
  • Knowledge of IDEA regulations and WV special education policies
  • Experience working with students with autism and/or multiple disabilities preferred
  • Strong understanding of behavior management and positive behavior intervention strategies
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and use student data to guide instruction
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in self-contained special education settings
  • Training in ABA, TEACCH, PBIS, or other structured teaching methodologies
  • Experience implementing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems
  • Knowledge of functional life skills instruction and community-based learning
