Job DetailsJob Location: The Kinkaid School - HOUSTON, TX 77024Position Type: Full TimeJob Category: 1.TeacherThe Middle English Teacher is responsible for creating a supportive learning environment and an instructional program that helps students reach their potential and achieve academic success.  This position includes responsibility for teaching 4 sections of fifth grade English and for advising a group of 10-12 students. Reporting to the Head of Middle School and supported by the Department Chair, the Middle School English Teacher promotes high levels of learning in an engaging and effective manner using various teaching methods and curriculum resources for students in grades 5.
The Middle School English Teacher embraces and advances the principles set out in Kinkaid’s core documents: mission and core values, Middle School Educational Philosophy, and the Portrait of a Teacher.
The Kinkaid School is a co-educational, nonsectarian day school enrolling over 1,500 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The student body is divided into the Lower School (PreK - 4th Grade), the Middle School (5th grade - 8th grade) and the Upper School (9th grade - 12th grade). Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, the Kinkaid School offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, and diverse culture.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and implement instructional plans, activities, and assessments that actively engage Middle School students in meaningful learning experiences
The ability to help students develop into exceptional writers and communicators
Work collaboratively with subject teaching partners, the Grade Level Team, the English Department, and administrators to foster a positive student learning experience
Collaborate closely with library staff to cultivate students' independent reading skills
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis
Maintain an accurate record of student attendance and grades
Provide students with timely feedback and keep parents or guardians informed of students’ academic and social/emotional progress
Assist in assessing changing curricular needs, offering suggestions for improvement
Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community
Set performance goals and engage in a cycle of professional growth and development
Exemplify Kinkaid’s four core values of honesty, responsibility, respect, and kindness in interactions with all members of the community by offering a collegial, energetic, and engaging demeanor
Fulfill additional responsibilities as requested by the division head.  Additional responsibilities include supervisory duties, serving on a school committee, coaching a sport, or leading a club, and are contingent upon student interest and teacher skill set, as well as the School’s needs
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in English or an academic discipline (Masters degree preferred)
A minimum of three years of experience teaching English/Language Arts, preferably to middle school students
Significant successful leadership experience within the context of the role
Applied experience demonstrating knowledge of the developmental characteristics and research-based practices for effective instruction for middle school learners
An educational philosophy consistent with the mission of the School
Strong writing, speaking, and organizational skills
