This role provides an exciting opportunity to work at the interface of academic research, clinical innovation and industry within an internationally renowned Magnetic Resonance research environment at King’s College London. Based primarily at KCL, you will work closely with one of Siemens Healthineers’ key academic collaboration partners to initiate, develop and support innovative MR research projects. This is a strongly hands-on scientific role, combining advanced scientific expertise and technical consultation with active contribution to the implementation, testing and development of new MR methods and technologies. You will help translate emerging concepts into robust research and clinical applications.

You will act as an important scientific link between scientists, clinical researchers and Siemens Healthineers research and development teams, working particularly closely with the global MR organisation and relevant teams at Siemens Healthineers headquarters. The successful candidate will therefore bring a strong understanding of MR physics, technology and engineering, alongside a good appreciation of the clinical applications of MRI. The role will involve frequent interaction with MR experts at Siemens Healthineers headquarters to discuss emerging research concepts, identify the appropriate technical and scientific support, and help connect promising developments at KCL with wider Siemens Healthineers innovation and development activities.

A key aspect of the position will be identifying innovative methods and technologies with the potential to progress beyond academic research. Working with colleagues across Siemens Healthineers, and with external collaborators, you will help define strategies for their technical implementation, validation and clinical evaluation, with the potential to contribute to future product development. Facilitating the translation of pre-clinical and methodological developments into the clinical environment for real-world assessment will therefore form an important part of the role.

The position will require you to develop an in-depth understanding of research concepts originating within the collaboration and communicate these effectively to relevant Siemens Healthineers teams. You will help identify the scientific, technical and organisational support required for individual projects, bringing together the appropriate expertise, technologies and resources to enable successful delivery. A substantial part of the role will involve direct, hands-on scientific and technical development. You will be expected to actively contribute to the implementation, prototyping, testing and validation of collaborative research projects, rather than acting solely as a scientific interface or project coordinator. You will be expected to be, or become, proficient in Siemens Healthineers’ proprietary MR programming and reconstruction environments, including IDEA and ICE, as well as C++.

Beyond individual research projects, you will contribute to the continued development of the strategic collaboration between Siemens Healthineers and KCL, identifying opportunities for new areas of joint research and helping to strengthen Siemens Healthineers’ position as a leading scientific and collaboration partner within the global MR community.

Key responsibilities

  • Actively contributing hands-on to the scientific and technical development of collaborative MR projects, including implementation, prototyping, testing and validation of new methods and technologies
  • Developing innovative MR techniques in close cooperation with our academic partner and validating new applications clinically, including developments in acquisition, image reconstruction, image analysis and other emerging computational approaches where relevant.
  • Bridging novel concepts and technological innovations with the clinical environment to enable real-world evaluation and inform future product development.
  • Successfully driving collaboration projects.
  • Submission of invention disclosures with the aim of protecting company intellectual property
  • Disseminating collaboration results at scientific congresses and in peer reviewed journals together with our collaboration partners.
  • Develop a strong relationship with the MR development team in Siemens Healthineers MR Headquarters in Erlangen, Germany.
  • Acting as an interface between our collaboration partner and the collaboration, development and marketing teams at headquarters, as well as the global customer network of leading institutions collaborating with Siemens Healthineers.
  • Reporting collaboration results back to product development and marketing.
  • Administration and management of collaboration projects.
  • Participation at scientific workshops in the region and giving presentations at meetings, seminars, and scientific congresses.
  • Supervision or co-supervision of co-funded PhD students and contribution to their scientific and technical development.

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • Profound scientific MR applications, image reconstruction and/or sequence programming experience and an affinity for clinically relevant applications development in medical imaging with a proven track record.
  • Experience with artificial intelligence and machine-learning methods applied to MRI, including deep-learning-based image reconstruction and/or AI-enabled image analysis.
  • A strong scientific track record demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals, together with experience communicating scientific results to the wider research community.
  • Outstanding communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain relationships with a variety of people across different roles, seniority levels and geographical locations.
  • Strong evidence of ability to work as part of multifunctional team.
  • Good networking and collaboration skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop new and innovative solutions.
  • You enjoy learning from and working across different cultures.
  • Excellent English language skills are required.
  • Although this role is site-based, there may be some requirement for international travel as well as travel within the UK and Ireland.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Ideally, you will have experience working closely with physicians and scientists in the field of MR imaging, particularly within collaborative academic and/or clinical research environments.
  • Programming proficiency in C++, ideally with experience of the Siemens IDEA sequence development environment (SDE) and image calculation environment (ICE).
  • An awareness of intellectual property rights and appropriate handling of sensitive intellectual material
