Job Description

The Motor Vehicle Division is responsible for the collection and distribution of fees, sales tax, and personal property tax for the State, County, Cities, and other taxing authorities that levy taxes and/or fees. Johnson County Government has two motor vehicle locations for walk-in customers, one location for back-office functions and 68 employees that provide service to over half a million county residents.

If you are looking for a rewarding experience, then consider joining our Treasury, Taxation & Vehicles Department as a Motor Vehicle Specialist. Johnson County Motor Vehicle is currently seeking qualified candidates for an open Motor Vehicle Call Center Specialist position.

This position will be posted for 14 days and close on 11:59pm Thursday, October 22, 2026.

Responsibilities include:

  • Receives and responds to incoming calls, mail, and electronic inquiries such as emails, faxes, and online chats; answers detailed questions about titles, registrations, renewals, and other motor vehicle-related inquiries; determines and communicates motor vehicle requirements
  • Uses spreadsheets and systems to organize information and produce standard reports; completes research to locate and provide desired information as a subject matter expert
  • Resolves problems by clarifying issues; researching and exploring answers and alternative solutions; implementing solutions; and identifying and escalating unresolved problems appropriately
  • Assists customers with completing required forms when appropriate; collects forms and supporting documentation, reviews for accuracy and completeness; copies, collates, and routes forms to appropriate locations or staff
  • Calculates and collects fees for payment; resolves a variety of basic customer complaints, problems, and billing disputes; completes preliminary audit of cash and checks collected
  • Provides quality public service while achieving performance standards for accuracy, productivity, and financial balancing
  • Processes all types of motor vehicle transactions as needed
  • Follows up with customers as needed using professional and organized verbal and written communication; educates customers on self-service options for transactions and encourages use of these options
  • Trains and orients employees on the responsibilities of a Motor Vehicle Call Center Specialist position and policies and procedures related to the Call Center
  • Performs other duties as assigned

This position will be based out of the Mission Motor Vehicle Office.

Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. May require KS/MO driver’s license, depending on department or agency.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Preferred Job Requirements:

One year of customer service; one year of cashiering or money handling experience are preferred.

Education/Experience Substitutions:

Experience may be substituted for degree. Education may be substituted for experience.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

Within sixty (60) days of hire, employees (select DHE and EMS positions) must produce proof of immunization, proof of immunity, proof that immunization is medically contraindicated, submit a written objection to immunization based upon a sincerely held religious belief, or receive vaccination for the following: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR); Tetanus Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis (TDAP); and Varicella (Chickenpox).

All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
