Motion Editing Supervisor - ILM London
Req ID:
10158995
ILM London is looking for a Motion Editing Supervisor to join our team based in our Lacon House studio. As the critical bridge between the motion capture stage and final character animation, your role demands a unique hybrid of deep technical expertise, artistic sensitivity, and rigorous pipeline leadership.
The Motion Editing Supervisor will direct a highly specialised team of motion editors responsible for processing, cleaning, and retargeting raw, high-density motion data onto complex 3D rigs, often translating human proportions onto entirely different creature anatomies.
The successful candidate will collaborate constantly with Mocap, Animation, Crowd, Production, and overall VFX Supervisors to troubleshoot proprietary toolsets and manage production schedules.
The Motion Editing Supervisor will also serve as the primary point of contact for department setup, standardisation, and daily operations across multiple global studio sites, dedicating significant time to mentoring cross-site teams and maintaining high standards.
Oversee daily task management of the Motion Edit artists who process, clean up, and refine raw motion capture data, and collaborate with production to assign shots.
Oversee the technical and creative process of mapping human joint movements to differently sized digital skeletons (e.g., mapping a 6-foot actor to a 9-foot character) while maintaining realistic physics, momentum, and weight.
Act as the creative safeguard for the actor's performance, ensuring subtle emotional nuances, facial tics, and physical intentions are accurately translated and not diluted on the CGI model.
Review shots before handoff to other departments to eliminate errors such as foot sliding, intersecting geometry, and jittery joint pops.
Work directly with Animation Supervisors, Virtual Production Supervisors, and overall VFX Supervisors to ensure motion data serves the director's ultimate vision.
Act as the primary point of contact for department setup, standardisation, and daily operations across multiple global studio sites.
Develop training programs and mentor cross-site teams to ensure high standards and operational consistency.
Proven experience in high-end film VFX and an up-to-date showreel.
Attention to detail and communication skills, coupled with excellent collaborative skills.
Proficient knowledge about Retargeting and Blending techniques.
Previous experience using Maya, MotionBuilder, Blender, and/or Nuance with motion-captured performances.
Prior experience with Mocap animation and Maya.
Prior experience in managing and supervising teams
Understanding of the principles of animation.
Sharp eyes for motion, timing and posture.
Proactive in problem-solving, with a keen eye to catch and identify technical issues.
Background in using Linux and Vicon Shogun Post is a plus.
As part of your application please submit a demo reel, shot breakdown, or equivalent showcasing your work. A current resume is required.
This role is Hybrid, which means the employee will be required to work a minimum of 2 days on-site per week at a Company designated location, and occasionally from home.
