Are you interested in gaining hands-on experience in environmental science, entomology, or mosquito control? This temporary STTAR opportunity offers a unique chance to work alongside experienced professionals while supporting mosquito surveillance and control efforts that help protect our community.

In this role, you’ll assist with both field and laboratory activities, including collecting and analyzing mosquito samples, conducting biological surveys, and setting, maintaining, and retrieving CDC mosquito traps. You’ll follow established scientific procedures while learning how surveillance data is collected, documented, and used to support mosquito control operations.

You’ll also gain experience using and maintaining laboratory equipment, recording test results, performing basic mathematical calculations, and preparing routine reports and documentation. Field assignments may require working independently outdoors for extended periods, giving you valuable experience in real-world environmental surveillance.

Examples of duties

Minimum Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses and/or Certificates: Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida driver's license.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of modern laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper sampling methods to obtain a representative sample and accurate test results.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of laboratory glassware and apparatus.
  • Knowledge of biological principles and theory.
  • Ability to apply biological and mathematical theory to solve practical problems in scientific analysis and laboratory testing.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and enforcing department codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to operate a 4x4 vehicle.
