Position Title: Monitor Tech Position Code: MonTech-6016 Department: Nursing Safety Sensitive: Yes Reports to: Department Director Exempt Status: No

Position Purpose:

All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI’s vision of providing the region’s best clinical care and patient service through an environment that fosters respect for others and pride in performance.

Support efficient operations of the nursing unit. Utilize skills in reception, transcription, maintaining medical records and clerical duties. Other duties as assigned.

Rhythm Strip Interpretation:

The Monitor Tech (MT) will maintain a baseline level of ECG monitoring for all ordered patients, detect and alert nursing staff to significant dysrhythmias, and perform continuous monitoring and intermittent recording on patients in crisis.

  1. Respond promptly to monitor alarms and takes appropriate action.
  2. Record, interpret, post and report rhythms on all monitored patients at the scheduled times and as needed.
  3. Recognize dangerous dysrhythmias and promptly notify the appropriate nurse caring for the patient and the ICU/PCU Clinical Lead assigned to the patient.
  4. Recognize significant rhythm changes, record them, and notify the ICU/PCU Clinical Lead assigned to the patient.

Patient Management and Disposition:

  1. Give report to oncoming MT, reflecting the last 12 hours of patient activity.
  2. Run rhythm strips, identify rhythm, and deliver to appropriate ICU/PCU Clinical Lead assigned to the patient.
  3. The MT will initial each strip.
  4. The MT will maintain a flow sheet documenting each patient’s rhythm and ectopy over the course of the day. Documentation to be every eight hours.
  5. All continuing artifacts should be investigated by the MT and adjustments made as needed.
  6. The MT will perform routine and troubleshooting activities related to equipment maintenance, equipment checks, and report any malfunctions to the ICU/PCU designated Charge Nurse.
  7. Complete the validation check list assuring all monitors are allocated and labeled accurately.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess effective interpersonal / communication skills
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English
  • Must have a working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Must have a working knowledge of computer data entry
  • Must have legible handwriting and the ability to decipher other’s handwriting
  • Must be able to prioritize and apply common sense understanding to carry out verbal or written instructions
