Job Description

Brunel has partnered with Hatch to support the hiring of a  Modularization Layout Specialist to join their team. Hatch is a globally recognized engineering, project delivery, and professional services firm, committed to the pursuit of a better world through positive change. With over 70 years of expertise across mining, energy, and infrastructure, Hatch delivers innovative and sustainable solutions worldwide.
Through this partnership, we are seeking a  Modularization Layout Specialist to join Hatch’s Project Delivery Group (PDG)—a dynamic and globally integrated team delivering world-class projects. The PDG combines deep expertise in sustainable studies, asset development, and operations, leveraging industry-leading methodologies, governance, and systems.

About the role
The Layout Specialist – Modularization is a senior technical role responsible for developing innovative 3D plant and module layouts to support modularization studies and project execution across a range of heavy industrial projects. The role requires strong conceptual design capability, deep experience with modular plant layout, and a solid understanding of transportation and logistics constraints associated with modular construction.

This position plays a key role in integrating layout development with engineering disciplines, logistics planning, and client requirements to ensure safe, constructible, and cost-effective modular solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop innovative conceptual and detailed 3D layouts to support modularization studies and projects, often with limited available information (e.g., PFDs, early-stage P&IDs).
  • Lead plant and module layout development for modular processing facilities, working closely with piping, mechanical, structural, civil, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.
  • Apply sound knowledge of piping design, mechanical systems, and fundamental plant processes to inform layout solutions.
  • Incorporate logistics and transportation considerations into layout development, including module transportation equipment, load limits, and constructability constraints.
  • Evaluate and account for various module transportation methods and ocean vessel types, including their limitations, advantages, and trade-offs.
  • Coordinate design interfaces across disciplines to ensure integrated and constructible modular designs.
  • Prepare and deliver clear technical presentations to clients, internal teams, and stakeholders.
  • Engage directly with client representatives to align layout solutions with project objectives and expectations.
  • Support project delivery by maintaining focus on quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
  • Provide technical guidance, planning, and supervision for small layout or design teams.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior and intermediate designers and engineers.
  • Promote and demonstrate strong commitment to safety, quality, and engineering excellence.

Required Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in heavy industrial plant design and layout, with a strong focus on modular facilities.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience using Bentley OpenPlant, 3D MicroStation, or equivalent 3D plant design tools.
  • Proven experience in the layout and design of mining, oil & gas, minerals, and battery metals processing plants, including material handling and product storage facilities.
  • Strong understanding of modular plant design principles, interfaces, and constructability considerations.
  • Working knowledge of module transportation equipment and logistics constraints.
  • Familiarity with industry and regulatory standards, codes, and best practices relevant to industrial plant design.
  • Solid understanding of project delivery processes and the interdependencies between engineering disciplines.
  • Experience working on both greenfield and brownfield projects, including interface and constructability challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and supervise technical work by others.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.

Additional Assets
  • Experience supporting or leading modularization studies during early project phases.
  • Direct experience with global projects and complex logistics environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for short durations to project offices or site locations, as required.

Personal Attributes
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, quality, and engineering excellence.
  • Highly collaborative with the ability to work across disciplines and stakeholder groups.
  • Practical, solution-oriented mindset with a strong focus on deliverables.
  • Proven ability to balance technical rigor with schedule and budget constraints.

Base salary range: $130,000 - $180,000

Why join Hatch?
  • Work with  high-performing, collaborative teams making a real impact
  • Be part of  innovative, global projects across industries
  • Engaging and collaborative office environment
  • Long-term career development opportunities
  • “Think globally, work locally” culture
